Veneta Day- Franklin passed away on August 11, 2018 in Walnut Creek, CA. She was a strong, caring, devout christian woman born and raised in Gary, Indiana. She was a long time educator of the Gary Public School System and she also taught for the School City of Hammond and Calumet Township. Veneta served more than two decades and taught many disciplines including chemistry, physics, biology, physical science, advanced chemistry and general science. Ms. Day-Franklin was passionate about teaching and received the Who's Who Among America's Teachers Award and was awarded the Most Influential Teacher in 2001. Veneta graduated from West Side High School in 1972. She then went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in 1977 from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in Foods and Nutrition, Dietetics. In 1998, Veneta received a Master of Science in Secondary Education from Indiana University Northwest, Gary, Indiana. Veneta was preceded in death by her parents Mr. Johnnie Lee Day Sr. and Willie Mae Day Jackson, her ex-husband John Franklin Sr. her brothers Johnnie Torrence, Henry Torrence, Johnnie Lee Day Jr., Willie James Day, and Stevie Lamar Day. She leaves to mourn her son John Franklin Jr. (Jaye) from Pleasant Hill California and her identical twin sister, Dr. Juanita Day (Arlington, Texas) and a host of relatives and friends. Visitation Friday August 17, 2018 from 2:00p.m.- 8:00p.m. Family 6-8:00p.m. at the Guy & Allen Chapel 2959 West 11th Avenue. Funeral services Saturday August 18, 2018 at 9:00a.m. at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist 1741 Fillmore Street .Rev. Isaac Culver Pastor. Interment Evergreen Memorial Park.
