I am so saddened and shocked to hear of the sudden loss of Cole. I first met Cole back in 2015 while working at Weymont golf course. He would come out golfing in the evening with his uncle Randy; and Cole would always buy a coconut water for his round of golf. He was such an enjoyable person to chat with as he had an impressive knowledge of many things; he was an engaging personality with a quick wit. I am so sorry that the lives of Michele and Matt have changed in such a horrifically profound way. The comments posted here by his dear friends echo a sincere sadness at the loss of such a fine and honorable young man. Thoughts and prayers of comfort to Cole’s family and friends.

This is one of the biggest fish he caught at the "honey hole".
Mat and Michele, I am so sorry for your loss. Your son was an amazing man and friend. He would always catch the biggest fish out of that spot. Just when I thought I had a good-sized fish, he would catch one even bigger haha. He taught me so much about fly fishing and fly tying. He used to "bake my noodle", as he would say, with some of the most philosophical conversations on those fishing trips too. He will be missed and never forgotten.

I had the privilege of spending a lot of time with Cole. In our first semester together at ISU, we happened to be together in literally all of the three or four different breakout groups that we had, as well as collaborating on a project together. In those groups we shared some very personal experiences and we got to know each other very well, and clicked on a lot of levels. The project was good enough that it was accepted for presentation at the Idaho Counseling Association convention in 2019, due in large part to Cole's intellect, talent and outstanding work ethic. But he was much more than a skilled collaborator, he was a fiercely loyal, immensely fun and funny, and deeply dedicated friend. His sense of humor always gave me a lift, and we sent so many late-night texts back and forth that my wife teased me about him being my "boyfriend." He was full of contradiction: caring and compassionate while cynical and sarcastic, fearlessly bold but full of self-doubt, and at once an avid outdoors man and deep thinking intellectual. We served as safety valves for each other, a place we could find a sympathetic ear to blow off some frustration or to share a laugh over something we found stupid or ridiculous. I miss him intensely already, and it is hard to imagine a semester without him. I hope that his family is proud of his character, his talents and his heart, and I am grateful that I got to be a part of his life for a time. Good fishing until we are together again, brother.

Matt and Michele. Bruce and I are extremely sorry for the loss of your precious son Cole. I know no words will be the right words to use for such a terrible loss. Please know that our thoughts and prayers go out to you all. We certainly could tell what proud parents you are when you, Matt, had recently updated us on Cole and his plans for the future. I guess God had other plans that we will never understand. May God Bless you all.

Cole was one of the best people we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is the only reason we got through living in Idaho. Spending weekends and evenings with him was one of the few bright spots we had there. He was such a unique, complex person. He was kind, and could be trusted with anything. He was hilarious in all the right ways. His inside joke timing was impeccable. He was a coffee snob. He was a talented outdoorsman, and would always send us drop pins of where he was going to be fishing and check-in times just in case something were to happen. He was talented musically. I am so glad he was able to get a guitar to have in Idaho after last Christmas. At the same time, he was one of the most well-read individuals I have ever met. His knowledge of classic American literature was phenomenal. He was one of the most emotionally intelligent people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He could talk about neuropsychology like it was elementary math. He was someone that we could both depend on, because he wasn't just friends with us, he was friends individually with both of us. In the short time that we have had Cole in our lives, he was able to make a profound impact. We both miss him so much already that it hurts. There are so many good memories that it is impossible to pick a favorite. Mat and Michele, we are so sorry for your loss. I hope you take solace knowing what an incredible person he was, and how much he impacted the world and the people he knew in his short time on this earth.

Cole was the kind of person that everyone hopes to encounter at some point in their lives. He was thoughtful, kind, and extremely intelligent. He had a way of bringing joy and laughter to just about any situation. My condolences for your loss, and for the loss of so many of us who were privileged to know your son. You raised a beautiful, brilliant, and amazing young man who had so much to give, but not enough time to give it. May your hearts rest easy and your minds be at peace.

My heart goes out to Mat and Michele on the lose of there beloved son Cole. Cole was loved and admired by anyone who happened to cross his path. I think about when Cole was playing a lot of golf and I would give Mat golf balls to give to Cole and he was so impressed that they were "Pro Vs". Mat and I would joke about Cole having 2 dads. Again I am so sorry for you lose and always remember that he was loved by many and that is beautiful reflection on his parents.
