Robert Schindhelm Obituary
Robert M. Schindhelm

Robert M. Schindhelm, age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2014. He was born on April 17, 1920 at his home in Marshfield where he grew up through his High School years. During those years Bob's interest in engineering was developed, primarily due to working for his father's gas and oil distribution business and earlier when his father was a railroad mechanic. Bob's interests led him to UW-Madison where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. In his spare time at the UW he pursued other interests such as boxing, his Pi Tau Sigma engineering fraternity and a special woman named Ann Meidl from Whitelaw. Soon after graduation Bob married Ann on September 5, 1942; they spent 71 wonderful years together. The first three years were during World War II where they were fortunate to be together in Columbus, Ohio where Bob worked for Curtiss-Wright designing airplanes for our troops. After the war Bob was asked to stay with the company, but Bob wanted to pursue his passion in the relatively new heating and cooling industry, so he moved his family back to Wisconsin where they settled in Appleton. Bob pursued his passion working with the Trane Company and August Winters and Sons.

Despite having eight children Bob was extremely active in his Appleton community and later in the Fremont-Weyauwega area. Bob and Ann were longtime active members at St. Therese Catholic Church, Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Weyauwega and the Christian Family Movement; among the many organizations that Bob was active in were the Knights of Columbus (Grand Knight), the Boy Scouts, the Elks Club, Serra Club and St. Vincent DePaul. With his mechanical engineering skills Bob played an important role on the building committee for the initial construction of Xavier High School in the late 1950s. When time would allow, Bob stayed active with hunting, fishing, camping, golfing and traveling; the latter three usually with Ann.

Bob is survived by his children, Jean (Lyle) Zuleger, Jim (Christine) Schindhelm, Jack (Linda) Schindhelm, Don Schindhelm, Richard (Ronda) Schindhelm, Mary Schindhelm, Mike (Jill) Schindhelm, Judy (Kevin) Buchanan; 19 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Ann Schindhelm, grandson Steven and his father, Butch Toonen, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.

Funeral liturgy for Bob will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 23, 2014, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 W. Pine Street, Appleton, with Rev. Dennis Ryan officiating. A time of visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, Donations in Bob's name can be made to St. Mary Central High School (% Jean Zuleger Scholarship Fund) or to Ss. Peter and Paul - St. Vincent DePaul. Online condolences may be expressed at

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staffs at Gardenview and Heartland Hospice for all of their compassionate care.
