Two or three times the past three decades I called Janet a national treasure. That's a little inaccurate. She was an international treasure.
If history is written well in 2030, Janet will be prominent in it. At this moment society has little awareness of the size and importance of her impact. But those of us who met her know, and her work will live on.

Dear Mayer and family,
Was truly sorry to hear of Janet's passing.
She had a generous spirit and a wonderful laugh.
She helped many people to find their own paths,
It was many years ago when I worked with her in Harrisburg, and I learned much from her.
My sincerest condolences to all of you. She will be missed.

Janet is to me
a force of nature,
like the sun rising,
the seasons turning,
the winds blowing,
or gravity-
I'm not sure I ever
really expected
her
not to be here
stemming the tide
of nearly universal confusion
about the true nature
of human minds
in all our diverse
brilliant
scattered
pieces
envisioning
and manifesting
a cohesive geometry
(puzzling* sometimes,
just for fun!)
with a guiding thread
stitching together
those who knew
and loved her:
Nothing is wrong with our minds.
* this is a reference to her puzzle quilts, which had pairs of blocks that were similar in structure but that she would use color to disguise which actually went together.
I will miss her tremendously. I send my deepest condolences to her family.
