SHIRLEY FISHER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 24 to Jul. 25, 2016.
FISHER SHIRLEY KRUMAN
Aged 92, died peacefully at home on July 21, 2016, surrounded by her family. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 69 years, Dr. Bernard Fisher; their three children, Dr. Beth Fisher (Dr. Harvey Himel), Joseph Fisher (Debra), Louisa Rudolph (James); five grandchildren, Samuel Himel, Jordan Fisher, Jillian Fisher, Ali Rudolph Kander (Ben), Jesse Rudolph; a great-grandson, Yeshaya Fisher; a sister-in-law, Harriet Kruman; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Julius Kruman and Jack Kruman (Estelle), and her brother-in-law, Dr. Edwin Fisher (Carole). Shirley was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to the late Neff and Bertha Kruman. At eight years of age, she moved to Pittsburgh, where she resided in Squirrel Hill for most of her life. She attended Colfax and Wightman Schools and then Taylor-Allderdice High School, where she became a lifelong learner, appreciating literature, foreign languages, music, science, and travel. She enrolled as a student at Carnegie Institute of Technology and went on to graduate from Penn State University. After college, she was employed as a researcher at the West Penn Hospital bacteriology laboratory. She assisted Bernard Fisher, her future husband, in his early experiments at the Rogoff Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh, thus setting the stage for her lifelong support of his clinical and research career at the University of Pittsburgh. Together they shared a commitment to academic pursuits, education, travel, the arts, and family. In later years, she was trained as a docent at the Carnegie Museum of Art. She also supported local farmers' markets and organic gardening, in addition to being an enthusiastic gardener at home. Services and interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends that donations in Shirley's name be made to the Shirley Kruman Fisher '42 Fund for Purposeful Student Travel (in care of Alumni and Friends of Allderdice High School), 2409 Shady Ave., Pgh., PA 15217, the Carnegie Museum of Art Docent Program Continuing Education, 4400 Forbes Ave., Pgh., PA 15213 or a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements entrusted to RALPH SCHUGAR CHAPEL, INC., family owned and operated for close to a century.

Dear Dr. Fisher, Beth, Louisa and Joe: We are deeply saddened by your unimaginable loss. Mrs. Fisher was, for me, the definition of "gracious" and, in the several times that my wife, Lisa, had the pleasure to speak with her, Lisa was struck by her warm and welcoming spirit. You and your families are in our hearts and minds. Walt and Lisa Cronin
