Age 91, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Monday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg. He was born in Swedesburg, son of the late Julian and Joanna (Szkilodz) Michanowicz. He married M. Louise Baer and she preceded him in death in 2004. Surviving are a daughter, Lou Ann Bueke and husband, Donald, in OK; a son, Dr. Andrew M. Michanowicz and wife, Angel, of Duncansville; four grandchildren: Dr. Andrew R. (Drew), Kelli, Erik and Mikaela; and two brothers: Frank of Nashville, TN, and Dr. John of Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony; three stepsisters; and a stepbrother. Dr. Michanowicz graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic High School, then earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mansfield College, and a D.D.S. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He established the graduate school of Endodontics and achieved Board Certification and Professor Emeritus. He lied about his age to serve in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. He received the Army of Occupation Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was the Dept. Chair of Graduate Endodontics at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Dental Medicine. He was in private practice with his brother John for 50 years. Andrew was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of the American Association of Endodontics, a fellow of the American and International College of Dentists. He raised swans, cultivated rhododendrons and enjoyed visiting the family home in Seven Springs Resort. Andrew never stopped making people laugh. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, at St. Paul Cathedral, 108 N. Dithridge St., Pittsburgh. Committal with military honors will be at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at a later date. Arrangements are by SORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, INC., Hollidaysburg. Dr Michanowicz was one of my favorite professors when I was in Dental school. He was always respectful to the students and was always there to lend a helping hand or give you sage advice. He had great warmth and good humor and will always be remembered as one of the good guys.
