DONALD MUSHALKO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 31, 2014 to Jan. 1, 2015.
MUSHALKO
DR. DONALD F.
Went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at Briarcliff Pavilion in North Huntingdon, PA, after a long illness. The son of the late George and Mary N. Lasota Mushalko. Born April 6, 1930, in McKeesport, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Helen C. Korch Mushalko; and also by a sister, Alice M. Mushalko. He leaves behind to cherish his memory siblings, George A. Mushalko, Edwin (Arlene) Mushalko and Jean M. (Mushalko) Jasiewicz; many nieces and nephews, as well as his late wife's niece, Joanne (Jim) Dorazio. He graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology, majoring in music education and violin. He was Concert Master of Carnegie Mellon's Orchestra for five years under the tutelage of Professor Goesta Andreason. His first music teaching assignment was with the Baldwin School District for approximately ten years, followed by his next assignment at Pittsburgh University Falk School. He completed his Masters and Ph.D. studies at the University of Pittsburgh, teaching there for 40 years. He was also president of the Polish Room at the University of Pittsburgh. His entire life was dedicated to music and keeping his Polish heritage, music and culture in the forefront. A lifetime member of the Holy Family Polish National Catholic Church of McKeesport, he served in various capacities and organizations including the parish council, but most noteworthy was that he served as either choir director or organist for more than 60 years. He was instrumental in naming the Polish Dance Troupe of the parish "Lajkoniki" and seeing that authentic costumes for the group came from Poland after his several visits to Poland, where he taught three semesters at Lodz University. His profound interest in Polish music and culture were second to none. He was Director of the Polish Board United Choirs of the Polish National Catholic Church for over thirty years, singing in many states in the USA and also Canada. He was a member of the National United Choirs of the church where he helped establish a music scholarship for young people affiliated with church. His love for the Polish language and church hymns spurred him on to work over ten years to publish a church hymnal with English translations. He was Vice President of the Kosciuszko Foundation of Pittsburgh and on the Board of Directors of the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York City. He was the Director of the Pittsburgh Based song and dance group "Karuzela" Chorus. He was instrumental in organizing "Bal Polonaise" through the Pittsburgh Polish Cultural Council of which he was a member. He will be missed by all those whom he taught to love the polish music both religious, lay and especially by those of us in the immediate family and the church family as well as those he touched with musical talent. Friends will be received on Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the JAYCOX - JAWORSKI FUNERAL HOME, INC., 2703 O'Neil Blvd., McKeesport, PA 15132, where a Blessing Service will begin on Saturday, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Family Polish National Catholic Church with Right Rev. Bernard Nowicki and Rev. Bruce Sleczkowski as celebrants. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, North Versailles, PA. The family suggests memorial contributions to Holy Family Polish National Catholic Church, 1921 Eden Park Blvd., McKeesport, PA 15132.

This note comes way too late, but one of my enduring memories from Falk School is Dr. Mushalko having us sing "Cats in the Cradle" in the late 1970s. Years later, I came to learn how accomplished and devoted to teaching he was. My condolences, very belatedly, to the entire family.

Dear Family,

Don was a dear friend and colleague for 12 years while we taught at Falk. Many musicals and programs were the result of his genius with kids. And he gave many of them a start in that field.
Please accept my apology for not being able to attend the viewing or funeral Weather was a factor.
Don will forever be in the hearts of many of us. May his memory be eternal.

Heaven has a new music director. I will never forget Don sitting at the organ conducting students in a multitude of operettas and playing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at the end of the year assembly. Don was a delight to work with and a joy to have as a friend. He touched so many lives in his own musical way. I know in my heart that he is now rehearsing a musical piece with all those that have gone before him.

Mr. Mushalko was my elemtary school music teacher at Rolling Hills Elem. in the 1950's. I can still hear his voice and his encouragement to all of us. Thanks for helping to create a love of music in all the little kids back then. RIP.

Oh my, what an amazing legacy Mr. Mushalko leaves behind. Even the posts here are a tribute to his creativity and flexibility in teaching approaches. My many personal memories include him allowing me to play my own arrangement of 'Let It Be', being allowed to play the organ as an accompanist to the Chorus production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" along with Robin Avery, and his encouragement to me and Nancy Hornick for sharing our guitar and vocal duets, .I still remember some of the songs he taught us along with the different voice parts, and you will still find me clapping out syncopated time to too many songs I hear on the radio!

Great Educator!

Don was a talented leader of music and kids. He produced programs that helped students excell. I saw first hand the results that came from the work that he did. May he rest in peace and lead the many angels in heaven to the greatest musical ever produced. His work has just begun and he will live forever in the minds and hearts of his many students.

Dr. Mushalko was a dedicated professional and friend to all at Falk School. He started so many students on a career in music and acting professions. He will be remembered as an excellent teacher and a man with a heart of gold and a smile on his face. Thank you Dr. Mushalko !

There are innumerable Falk School students who owe their love of music, especially Gilbert & Sullivan, to Dr. Mushalko. I hope one of us can upload a photo of "Pirates of Penzance," "The Mikado", "HMS Pinafore"...

Mr. Mushalko was my beloved elementary school music teacher. Later, he became my colleague at Falk's nursery school. As I continued my career as an elementary school teacher, I taught countless children many of the songs that he taught me as a child and as a young adult. I send my sincere sympathy to his loved ones, and want them to know that he had a profound impact on me. I have loved Mr. Mushalko for 50 years. May he rest in peace.
