VILLELLA
ED, M.D.
Of Mt. Lebanon, passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016 the day before his 74th birthday. Beloved and devoted husband of Midge; father to Anthony (Jill), Lisa (Enzo), Vince (Maria), Angie (Jon) and Eddie; brother to Carmen and John; loving grandfather to his ten grand- children, Anthony, Maddie, Sophia, Matthew, Antonio, Edward, Ava, Samuel, Adelina, and William. Ed was born in 1942 to the late Eugene and Adelina (Aceti) Villella. His parents, Italian immigrants, raised him and his two brothers in Hazelwood. He attended Central Catholic and financed his education at Wheeling College and St. Louis University School of Medicine by working in the Pittsburgh steel mills through his summer and holiday breaks. He met the love of his life, Midge, in medical school and was married for 46 years. Ed started his practice at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh where he worked for over 40 years as a respected and accomplished General and Vascular Surgeon. Ed was blessed with healing hands and used his gift of compassion to bring comfort to others. Always selfless and giving, Ed devoted himself completely to his family, his patients, his friends and neighbors. He was most happy when surrounded by family and loved ones. Friends received Tuesday, 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, (412-563-2800) 1650 Greentree Rd, Scott Twp. 15220. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Anne's Church. My memory of Eddie Villella are warm ones. He was just a good kid, a good teammate on the football team at St. Stephen's Grade School in the mid-50s. Never in any trouble, rare for a kid from Hazelwood in those days. I think he was an altar boy, but I'm not sure. It was good and a source of community pride to see him become a doctor and a well-respected one at Mercy Hospital. He is missed by his friends and admirers. On the 2nd Anniversary of Dr. V's Death:

Dr. V., was a beautiful loving blessing to all of us. A memory anniversary of his death prayer message for his family is that... "One day it may be that this pain will be eased and the dates will not have such hold on your memories as they have . Though I know the love you have for him then and now, and forever will be always and forever that will never end. This not only to honor the life they lived but for the love they so generously so gave to each and everyone of us."
Today and always in my thoughts and prayers.

Our deepest sympathy to the Vilella family in the passing of Dr. Vilella. We have fond memories of the Vilellas as neighbor's and our children's activities, but we also took our older son to Dr. Vilella with a childhood injury. He was wonderful- very professional and compassionate with a serious injury, which healed fine. Our love and prayers are with you from all of the Van Raaphorsts.

I just learned today (Dec. 1) of the death of Eddie Villella. He was a classmate of mine and a teammate of mine on the football team at St. Stephen's Grade School football team in Hazelwood. We were the starting running backs and our quarterback was Mike Supsura. Eddie was always a quiet, under the radar kind of kid, well behaved and a good student. I was proud to learn later that he had become a doctor, a vascular surgeon at Mercy Hospital, a real success story for our mill town community. He led a good life and helped others to live as well. I was fortunate to know him in my youth. Jim O'Brien, Pittsburgh sports author and historian

Midge, children and grandchildren, DeDe and I cannot put in words how sorry we are with the horrible reality of Eddie's passing. The saving grace for us are the many smiles and warm memories of the times we shared together over the past (50) fifty plus years. We have been most fortunate for those times we shared with the two of you too numerous to recount in this short space. Hopefully those memories will in some small measure will help you, now and in the future, sustain you and your family in this most trying time. We love you, Tom and DeDe

My Deepest Sympathy to the Villella Family
I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Dr V in the early 80s as his accountant. I later worked for him in his practice in the early 90s. If a patient needed surgery and didn't have the money, he did the surgery without charging anything. He was one of the most sincere, generous and compassionate persons that I have ever known. He was a man of character and always held true to his beliefs. May God grant him mercy, may perpetual light shine upon him, may he rest in peace.

Dear Villella family. Ed was a great mentor during my general surgery residency. He was a real joy to meet every AM, always had a peaceful and joyful smile. Trying to explain how he influenced my life in surgery, I can only say that I tried to follow his lead in my future surgical experiences. I will always have great memories of our family gatherings in Pittsburgh, Missouri, California, learning to ski at Hidden Valley, and the numerous road trips to the Burgh for Steelers and Pens games. Uncle Eddie's kindness, humor, and that seemingly never-ending smile are inextricably woven into those memories. A great man. May God rest his soul and give comfort to his amazing family and all who knew and loved him.

On behalf of the Wheeling College Class of 1964 we extend our most sincere condolences to Ed's wife Midge, his children and his grandchildren. We remember Ed as a caring and gentle soul so it is no surprise that his personal and professional life reflected those attributes. At times like this we know there are no words that can heal the loss and the void created by Ed's passing but hopefully Midge and family can take some comfort in the many memories created by his life. I know class members also have many fond memories of Ed during his time at Wheeling and some have kept in touch with him throughout the last 52 years. We honor his life of service and bid farewell to a treasured Classmate.

Dear Villella Family,
I first met Dr. and Mrs. Villella when I had the pleasure of teaching Spanish to Tony and then Angie. Dr. Ed was so supportive and appreciative of those who taught his children. He was also instrumental in saving the life of our son, Scott, with emergency surgery at Mercy Hospital. My husband , Bob, was a classmate at St. Stephen's grade school in Hazelwood. His wonderful parents were friends of my Italian immigrant grandparents. My family and I are saddened by his early death and send his family our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy.

Dear Dr. Villella Family,

I met Dr. V. when he was an intern and I was a brand new GN. Our Italian heritage helped to form a strong bond between us. He was a friend and a mentor to me and to many many surgeons and nurses. He always took the time to answer questions. He was a fantastic and well respected surgeon. What a loss for the medical profession!!! I know you are now at peace my friend.

Ed and I grew up together in Hazelwood. We spent a lot of time together playing sports and socializing. He had a great sense of humor and we laughed a great deal. One memory that sticks in my mind is that even in grade school he wanted to be a doctor. After college we lost touch but reconnected later. He will be missed and always in my thoughts.

Dr. Villella used his judgement, skills, and intuition to save me from a life threatening incident some 25 years ago. Thanks to him, I've lived to enjoy 5 grandchildren, retirement, and a great quality of life. I am forever in his debt.

His bedside manner, in a critical situation, is noteworthy. Doctor, you are gone too soon, but will always be in my prayers.
