GARY KELLY
On Sunday, June 29, 2014, Gary Kelly Carlough passed on peacefully from the Earth. Gary was born in Bethlehem, PA and attended school in Grosse Isle, MI before graduating from Latrobe High School and then heading to the University of Arizona. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture, and later studied at the Architectural Association in London, England. In the early 90s Gary opened a private practice and ultimately founded EDGE Studio in 1995 where he practiced with wife and partner, Anne Chen. A professor of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University for 20 years, Gary was a devoted teacher and mentor. A resident of Pittsburgh since the early 70s, Gary was passionate about the cultural and civic life of the city. He served on the board of Quantum Theater and on the Design Committee of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. His designs are featured throughout the nation and can be experienced in and around the Pittsburgh landscape. His work was often published and has won some of the most prestigious awards in the industry. He is survived by beloved wife, Anne Chen; sons, Todd Carlough, Hall Carlough (Michael Kriak) and Xing Carlough; brother, Ken Carlough; and sisters, Kelly Fleming (Bill) and Amy Weickert; he is also survived by godmother, Joby Stracka; as well and nieces, nephews, and other loving family. He was preceded in death by father, Howard Spencer Carlough; mother, Emily Kelly Carlough; as well as grandparents, Joe and Dot Kelly and Milton and Flossy Carlough. A witty and charming man with an infectious laugh, Gary was loved deeply by his family and friends and will be sorely missed. A Celebration of Gary's life will be held at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, 4215 Fifth Ave. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at 1 p.m. Interment will be private. Remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Pittsburgh Children's Hospital in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by JOHN A.
