JAMES RICHARD
Age 58, of Slippery Rock, PA, passed away at his residence, on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, following an extended illness. He was born in Victoria, Texas on August 31, 1957, to Richard Leroy Powell and Erma Jewell McCleskey Powell. He married Julie Elaine Mahan on October 2, 1982. He graduated from East Stroudsburg High School in 1975, and later West Chester University in 1979, with a degree in Music Education. He graduated with a degree in Turf Grass Management from Penn State University in 1981. Jim was a sales representative for E. H. Griffith, Inc. of Pittsburgh, a company described by the family as "very family oriented." He enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming and golfing. He was a member of Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock. Survivors include his wife, Julie at home; daughter, Jenny E. Kaplan and husband, Bryan of Pittsburgh; son, Joshua J. Powell and fiancée, Emily A. Peabody of Erie; mother, Erma Powell of East Stroudsburg; two sisters, Cindy Wallace and husband, Lloyd of Stroudsburg and Sharon Powell of Newton, NY; and grandson, Evan Kaplan. He was preceded in death by his father. A Memorial Service will be held at Center Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 24, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. William Mumaw presiding. The family will receive friends at the SMITH FUNERAL HOME, on Saturday, January 23, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be given to Northwestern PA Golf Course Superintendents Assoc., P.O.
