Dr. JOHN R. "BOB"
Age 86, of Latrobe, passed away Monday, January 18, 2016, at his home. He was born August 12, 1929, in Latrobe, a son of the late Dominic and Elsie (Fiorina) Mazero. A lifelong resident of Latrobe, Bob Mazero graduated from Latrobe High School in 1947, where he excelled in football, basketball and track and where he met the love of his life, Rosemary. Dr. Mazero received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 and his Medical Degree in 1954 from George Washington University. He served his internship from 1954 to 1955 with the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh where he also served a residency from 1955 to 1956. He joined the US Air Force serving from 1956 until 1958 at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California where he attained the rank of Major. He then served an additional residency from 1958 to 1959 at the Cleveland Clinic. He also completed the Program for Health Systems Management at Harvard University in June/July 1981. His career in internal medicine began at the Pittsburgh Diagnostic Clinic in 1959 and then moved to Latrobe in 1961 where he practiced for the remainder of his life. He was certified in 1964 and recertified in 1987 by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in 1987 for the Advanced Achievement in Internal Medicine. He served as Medical Director from 1966 until 1996 at the Latrobe Area Hospital where he was on the Active Medical Staff from 1961 until 1996 and the Emeritus Medical Staff from 1996 until his passing. He served as president of the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation from 1996 until his passing. His academic appointments included Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, and Preceptor for Students from Jefferson Medical College, Temple University School of Medicine, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His professional affiliations included the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Westmoreland County Medical Society. He was a Fellow with American College of Physicians, a founding Fellow with the Peripheral Vascular Society of America, a charter member of the American Academy of Medical Directors, and a Fellow with the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Mazero received numerous awards over his lifetime including: the Community Service Award from the Latrobe Area Chamber of Commerce in 1982, the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Salvation Army in 1993, and the Westmoreland Columbus 500 Award in 1995. He was honored by Saint Vincent College in 1988 with the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Science Degree. He generously supported Saint Vincent over the years in many ways including a scholarship that he and his wife, Rosemary, created in memory of their late son, Michael. Later, they joined in the effort to help renovate and expand the Saint Vincent Science Center and ensure that the educational programs were of the highest quality through the creation of funds for what became known as the Dr. John "Bob" Mazero Science Hall and Scholarship Funds. He was again honored by Saint Vincent in 2008 with a Tribute Dinner recognizing his "lifetime of extraordinary service and visionary leadership in the health care of the people of the Latrobe area as a physician, medical director, educator, philanthropist, husband, father and man of faith." He was a member of St. Vincent Basilica in Latrobe and the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Arizona where he spent many winters. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, walking, and reading. In addition to his parents, Dr. Mazero was preceded in death by a son, Michael S. Mazero; a brother, Doyle Mazero; and a sister, T. Jean Mazero. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rosemary K. (Petrosky) Mazero; four children, John R. Mazero, Jr. (Joyce) of Fairview, TX, Jeffrey D. Mazero (Erika) of Mullica Hill, NJ, Mary L. Wyrick (Rick) of Pataskala, OH, and Joseph P. Mazero (Lynna) of Fishers, IN; and seven grandchildren, Alex, Dominique, Michael, Matthew, Gabrielle, Joseph, and Mia. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the HARTMAN - GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME, INC., 1500 Ligonier Street in Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in St. Vincent Basilica with the Rt. Rev. Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., Archabbot, as celebrant. Everyone please go directly to the church. Entombment will follow in the St. Vincent Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation, One Mellon Way, Latrobe, PA 15650, or to the Dr. John "Bob" Mazero Science Hall and Scholarship Funds, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650.
