SCHAFER SANDRA LEE, RN, MN, AOCN

Age 66, of Scott Twp., unexpectedly went to meet the Lord and her parents on December 7, 2018. Beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Rita (Weishaar) Schafer, Jr.; cherished sister of Carol (the late Lt. Col. Daniel) Conn, Joan (Don) Schrenker and Joe Schafer, III; devoted aunt to Colleen (Mark) Yarian, Sean (Angela) Conn, Kelly (Steve) Irvine, Scott (Erika) Schrenker and Shannon (Eric) Kumor; and great-aunt to Legion and Gabriel Yarian, Taylor and Molly Irvine and James Kumor; also survived by many loving friends and neighbors. Although her accomplishments were many, Sandra was humble. She was an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at Shadyside Hospital for 25 years and most recently the Director of Credentialing for Hospice and Palliative Care. She was a past President of ONS, the co-founder of Camp Raising Spirits, and a member of Our Lady of Grace Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. Sandra was a mentor for countless nurses, she was a selfless caretaker of everyone she knew and a tireless worker. She loved to travel, was a wonderful cookie baker and was thoughtful and generous beyond imagination. She never forgot a birthday and found ways to make everyone feel special. Family and friends received on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the WARCHOL FUNERAL HOME INC., 3060 Washington Pike, Bridgeville (412.221.3333).  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Grace Church.  Memorials may be made to Camp Raising Spirits, 810 Irwin Drive Pittsburgh, PA 15236. Sandy,
You were such a special person, your kindness and thoughtfulness will be greatly missed

Sandy,
My heart simply broke the day I learned that you made your transition. I already miss your bright smile, your big hugs, & the remarkable way that you made each of us think we were the only ones you had to keep up with for our re-certification (how DID you do that?).

Quite simply, from the day that we met years ago, you showed an amazing quality of making me feel special even when surrounded by a sea of others. Wouldn't the world be a better place if we had had that ability? But that was your gift and cherish it we all did.

Every year, I join the masses who travel across the country about our shared passion, palliative care. It wouldn't really resonate that I was truly with my "tribe" until I saw you with that smile & hug. Only then would I feel that I had once again reached the oasis of "conference". I distinctly remember that feeling last year and my heart breaks knowing that was the last hug we would share.

We can each only try and channel those beautiful qualities that were you in the spirit of your memory. I will work hard to greet others as you did, to make others feel special and in the back of my heart, a part of me knows you will be watching over us.

Godspeed, Sandy...

Love surrounds you & your family,

I had the privilege of working with Sandy for over ten years as a volunteer on the national certification board for hospice and palliative nurses. Her passion, her intellect and her personal kindnesses to everyone she worked with will be hugely missed at the national office in Pittsburgh. We met as professional colleagues but became friends primarily because of her generous and caring heart. I truly miss her.

Sandy was indeed an amazing person. Where did she get all that positive energy and as others have said, the ability to make anyone near her feel better about his or her self? She was unbelievably considerate and kind. It was a great pleasure to get to know her, her brother Joe, and the many colleagues to whom she introduced me. I miss her.

I knew Sandy only through my dear late mother, Hilda Kettren. They worked closely together as RNs at Shadyside back in the 70s and even though we never met in person, I felt as though we were friends. Many years later, after a lot of career changes and having lived in California for over 40 years, I entered Hospice and Palliative nursing, and was absolutely delighted to learn of Sandy's wonderful accomplishments and position with the Hospice and Palliative organization. My deepest condolences to the family, friends and all who had the privilege of working with her. Our organization and profession will surely miss her.

Words cannot say the joy that Sandra brought with her to everyone at Camp Raising Spirits, and I was just so lucky that my husband (Matt Lukowski) and I were able to go to camp to enjoy everyone, especially all the love that was shown to use by so many nurses there each year. Matt passed away on Jan. 18, 2018, and I know that his in heaven meeting Sandra in spirit, since she was one of the outstanding people that we always looked forward to seeing at camp. It was just so magical all the love and concern that the ONS showed to everyone there, and Sandra will always be in our hearts. She went out of her way to make so many people welcome and loved at camp, and I will miss her dearly.

With heavy heart I share in mourning this loss. Sandra was always "at the ready" with knowledge, encouragement, and efficiency in her actions as she guided many many hospice and palliative nurses through the process of certification. She was just one of those people who, in their unassuming, kind, and competent way, has left their legacy in so many ways.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Sandy since she started as a CNS at Shadyside. We were in ONS together and of course, Camp Raising Spirits. Sandy had the biggest heart of anyone that I've ever known. Even after I moved from Pittsburgh, she never forgot my birthday. There will certainly be a huge void at Camp without her. My sincere condolences to all of you. She will truly be missed.
