Paul called:

Wow what a shocking heartbreak!

I was Betsy Clark and some thought I was Cathy’s sister.

I met Thom at church; I was involved in WPLW radio, Expression, traveled with the band and family, watched his children while he ministered on TV, at coffeehouses, etc. Back then; I went to most of his gigs so I must have been one of his biggest groupies…….. or maybe that was because I was bouncing, one of his children to the tunes of the Shine band. Mostly that was Holly and after the “brood” became too large to travel with the band we stayed at their house, and maybe watched His Place, or Cornerstone on TV. I fielded the calls for “Mom & Dad” when David went to Glory. In time I lost touch with the whole family. In short we worked, played & praised together. He was loved and will be missed, until we are with him in paradise.

I am a small part of Thom's early days, as we met and worked together in the mid 70's during the early days of WPLW Radio in Carnegie, PA. Despite our obvious theological differences (I, the wide eyed Catholic charismatic, recent Duquesne grad and newly hired DJ, he, the folksy, laid back Southern Baptist), Thom & I talked about and shared our mutual love for the Lord and music. I was pleased to recently discover he was living and performing in the Baltimore area; I am equally saddened by his sudden passing. I regretfully never took the moment to contact him and say hello again! I will remember his creative talents, good guitar picking, and friendly Okie drawl. My sincere sympathy to the Hickling family for their loss. I wish you all the Holy Spirit's love and comfort during this difficult time. Rest in God's Peace, Thom.

"May the Light Shine On"

-Trey Anastasio

Thom was a light of Christ and there is no doubt that we all have been blessed by his time here. I am grateful to have met Thom, even though I only knew him for four months. The gift in Christ is that he has always spent eternity with us all.

In a man's life he resurrects the dead in a dream and in a second dream he buries them.

What wonders we find in knowing others. Thank you Thom.

The world has lost a wonderful and creatively different person. I met Thom and his family almost 30 years ago we sang together often and were part of a carnegie church group in the 70's. Thom was always the first one to look at every situation in a different light from everyone else I knew. I will miss him, and his funny emails. To Holly, David, Ben and Jeana all who I rememeber as a babys/toddlers it was wonderful to see your pictures, all grown up and Cathy, Dolores, Paul and Judi my heart goes out to all of you and my prayers are with you. I know we can rejoice that Thom is with the Lord, but he will be very much missed by all who knew him.

I'm as "tall as I need to be" thanks to Thom - I recall sharing a story with him on not being hired once because the interviewer told me I was too short to be successful in sales - Thom, half seriously and have humorously said to me.. "you're as tall as you need to be" and subsequnetly over the years, whenever we would talk, it seemed he always remembered to close his conversation to me with that "remark". He was a special person and strong witness to the patience and love of Jesus. My heart goes out to all his family members as well as friends - Thom was the kind of person who "was always around" even if he wasn't in the immediate area.

All of you are in my prayers.

Many years ago, Thom and Kathy helped a friend and I start a radio program, called "On Godly Living". Their loving, Christian advice was so appreciated. My former husband, Vince and I attended Thom's church a few times and fellowshipped with them. Please accept my most sincere sympathies for the loss of Thom; he will be greatly missed, and I will never forget him.
