EVANCHO
ELIZABETH M. "BETTY" (FIGULSKI)
The angels carried Betty to the welcoming arms of Jesus on Friday, May 13, 2011. Born on November 28, 1915, Betty was a miracle from the beginning weighing less than two pounds. A resident of Turtle Creek for 92 years, she was the most adored wife of Joseph; most loved mother of Connie (John) Morenzi, Marjorie (Len) Tinsley, Bill (Linda) Evancho and Marci (Ken) Mason; "Nanny" to Beth (David) Rossetti, Suzanne (Donald) Holmes, Judy (Rush) Line, Nick Tinsley, Marc (Connie) Tinsley, Amy (Michael) Wozniak, Melissa (David) Becker, Michael (Lisa) Evancho, Michelle (Craig) Sikora, Bill (Noelle) Evancho, Jeffrey (Lesley) Evancho, Matthew, Joseph, Jim, and Brian Evancho and Kenny Mason; great-grandmother of 30. Baby sister of the late Charles, Joseph, Clint, Warren, Helen, Regina, Dorothy, Edna, Irene and two infant brothers; favorite aunt to numerous nieces and nephews and on Easter, Betty Bunny to all. Betty was a pillar of the community well known by virtually all of Turtle Creek's long term residents. She was a graduate of Union High School - precursor to Turtle Creek High School - where she met her husband Joe. During WWII she worked in the printing department at Westinghouse while also a mother to her first two of her four children. After the war, she devoted her life to raising her family and became active in her church and community. She was a member of St. Colman Parish and was a lifelong member and former officer of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary and also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America. Once her children were grown, she re-entered the workforce as a teacher's aide for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit at St. Colman School and Wilkins Elementary. She also served as Judge of Elections for numerous years. Friends welcome Sunday 4 - 8 p.m. and Monday 2 - 4 and 6-8 p.m. in the PATRICK T. LANIGAN FUNERAL HOME, TURTLE CREEK/MONROEVILLE CHAPEL, 1111 Monroeville Ave. at James St., Turtle Creek 412-823-9350. I'm so sorry to hear of Mrs. Evancho's passing. After all these years, so many memories of her, Mr. Evancho, Connie, Margie, Billy and Marci still linger from my childhood next door. I'll always remember watching color TV for the first time in their welcoming living room: it was The Wizard of Oz! My deepest sypathies to all of you on the loss of a truly wonderful lady.

All those summers I spent in Turtle Creek...all those visits on Aunt Betty's back porch, eating frozen grapes. To this day I keep grapes in the freezer just like Aunt Betty. What a wonderful aunt and one of the kindest people ever to walk the earth.

Nan,
I will miss visiting and chatting with you at your kitchen table and the chance to bring you my homemade pierogies. I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to make them for us this year. But you will be on my mind and in my heart each and everytime I do make them. I love you and will miss you very much. I can't imagine a world without Nan, but knowing Heaven has her makes it a little easier.

Aunt Betty and her darling husband Uncle Joe filled their home with love and laughter. One of my favorite summer memories as a child was walking down the hill from my grandmother's to open the little gate to Aunt Betty's house and going around to the back porch. I was always greeted with a big smile and a hug no matter what she was doing. Her home, like her heart, was filled with cheer and warmth. She will be sadly missed, but I know she is in the arms of God, her reward for a beautiful life.

Whenever we needed divine intervention we would ask Nan for help. She had a special connection with God who seemingly always answered Nan's prayers. I guess God decided it was time for her to hand deliver our requests. I love my Nan and will miss her everyday.

Rest in peace, Aunt Betty. You made me my first ever homemade cinnamon donut, shaken in a brown bag with cinnamona and sugar and now I'm hooked. My love and condolences to Uncle Joe, Connie, Marge, Bill, Marci and their children as you mourn the loss of your matriarch.
