MANZO MICHAEL J.
Michael J. Manzo, a partner in the law firm of Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney, Pittsburgh, and legal counsel to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League, died unexpectedly early Monday at his home in Mount Lebanon. Mr. Manzo was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1948, the son of Mary (Lawless) Manzo and the late Vincent Manzo. An outstanding high school athlete in football, basketball and track, he was an all-regional defensive back on the Scranton Central High School football team in 1965, and went on to play on Princeton University's Ivy League Championship team of 1969. He also played lacrosse at Princeton, earning first team All Ivy honors in 1970, and was named to the third team All American squad. He was also co-captain of the North team in lacrosse's annual North-South Game in 1970. He graduated from Princeton that same year, earning a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in chemical engineering. After college, he served a tour of duty with U.S. Army Intelligence assigned to the German border regions. Following his military service, he went on to earn an M.B.A. at the University of Scranton in 1973, and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1976. Mr. Manzo's first position post-law school was law clerk to Justice Michael J. Eagen, Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He moved to Pittsburgh in 1977 and joined the firm of Klett, Rooney, Lieber & Shorling, as a litigator. The firm later merged with Buchanan Ingersoll to become Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney. Mr. Manzo has been recognized by Philadelphia Magazine as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer, and last year was named one of the Best Lawyers in America. He was an elected Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and of Litigation Counsel of America. He served his profession as a member of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's Committee on Rules of Evidence, and as a member and past president of the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County. Since 1999, he has been a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Civil Litigation Section House of Delegates. A lawyer with a strong belief in legal services for all, he was committed to the Neighborhood Legal Services Association as a member of its board of directors and as a volunteer for its Equal Justice Campaign. He was a volunteer for the Legal Aid Society's "Project for the Homeless," and served on PBA's Legal Services for Exceptional Children Committee. He has also lectured widely on trial tactics and evidence for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and the Allegheny County Bar Association, and had been on the adjunct faculty at the University of Pittsburgh Law School. Mr. Manzo was also involved in the civic life of Allegheny County as a member of the board of trustees of St. Anthony's School for Handicapped Children from 1989 to 1995, through participation in United Way campaigns, the Parent & Child Guidance Center's Partners with Youth Campaign, the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts Capital Fund Campaign, and the Anti-Defamation League Community Service Award Committee. Mr. Manzo was also an active member of the Western Pennsylvania lacrosse community. He coached numerous youth lacrosse teams in Mt. Lebanon and was named 2003 Man of the Year (Men's Division Coaches Council, Secondary Schools) by U.S. Lacrosse. In his law practice, Mr. Manzo specialized in commercial and construction litigation and sports law. He was inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame in 2010 for his longstanding legal service. In addition to his work with the WPIAL, he represented the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mr. Manzo is survived by his wife of 33 years, Kathy; three daughters, Margaret Cregan of New York City, Mary Patricia (William) Johnston of Boston, Massachusetts, Caitlin Elizabeth of New York City; a son, Vincent Anthony of Washington, DC; his mother, Mary Manzo of Scranton, PA; and a sister, Mary Ellen (Clifford) Williams also of Hot Springs, Virginia. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SVC., 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Twp. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Bernard's Church, Mt. Lebanon. The family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to a charity of your choice.

To the Manzo family,
Every now and then I surf the web to find out whatever happened to so-and-so... that is, that person I haven't seen or heard from in ages but who had been an important piece in my earlier life. So this morning I wondered what Mike Manzo was up to these days, only to discover the sad news of his death last year.
Mike and I had been in the Army together back in 1970-72, meeting first at the language school in Monterey, where we studied German, but my main connection to Mike was that we shared an apartment in Bad Neustadt, a small hamlet on the East German border, where we worked together as German linguists in a small military intelligence office. Mike was one of the smartest people I ever knew. He was also one of the most decent people as well. Plus he was a heck of a lot of fun! Long after we bid each other farewell when we returned to civilian life, I was always thankful to have known Mike.

I just learned of Mike's death, and am so sorry to hear of it. I first learned of Mike through his wonderful dad, Vince, who was a dear friend of my father's in Scranton. Mike was kind enough to provide me advice on law school and clerkships, and then gave me wonderful advice on the profession when I was clerking in Pittsburgh. I will always appreciate the mentoring he gave to this kid from Scranton.

I just learned of my dear friend, Mike's death, through the Pocius family. Bob Spagna and I and your Mike and Susie Morgan 'doubled' dated through h.s. I was very moved by Mike's sympahty note to me about my father, P.U.'36, who introduced Mike to P.U. Mike's regard for my father was so well expressed and could have been written only by Mike. Obviously, my family--as much as I-- knew Mike was so exceptional, while being down to earth and sincere. He gave and had so much to give; and he sincerely cared about others. His resume was so full and amazing. However, the resume did not capture Mike's soul, person, and gifts to all of us. I'm still in the disbelief stage--why do such bad things happen to good people and families? My Faith offers comfort, as I hope, and am certain, yours does also. Love to you all, and in all sadness and loss, Betsy (Betsy Henkelman, Central H.S. '66, Bucknell '70. 45 S Third St. Apt. 2, Lewisburg, PA 17837)

Dear Kathleen: Please accept my condolences on the sudden loss of Mike, who was a truly exceptional human being, a giving caring soul. I worked with Mike on Academy of Trial lawyers matters over several years and knew him because my son played Lacrosse. I grew up in Scranton and know that he was amazing even as a young man. I retired in 2009 and was late to learn about his passing. I wish I could have told you and your children in person what an impression Mike made on other lawyers like me. In the "big law biz", Mike was a standout. He always had faith, played fair and worked beyond hard. He will be missed.

June 3, 2011

Mrs. Manzo And Family,
I am very sorry to hear about Mike's passing away. I was a friend, classmate, and teammate of Mike's at Scranton Central High School. Not only was Mike a tough competitor and super athlete and student, he was an even better person. I had not seen Mike very often over the years, but I was hoping to see him at one of our annual football reunions, but it is not to be. The "Golden Eagles" lost a great one on Monday with Mike's passing away. My condolences to your family, our prayers are with you.

I had the privilege of working with Mike for the past fourteen years at BI&R. Mike was extra special. He was a leader, a great friend, and a brilliant attorney to so many. It was easy to see that Mike had a charisma about him and a well deserved respect for and from everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. I consider myself lucky to be one of those people. Unfortunately due to a death in my own family, I was unable to personally pay my heartfelt condolences to you. Mike will forever remain in our hearts and we will never forget him.

To Mike's Family,
I was very sorry to hear of Mike's unexpected passing this week. He was a sincere and forthright person to work with, unimpressed with status and was always respectful of everyone at Klett Rooney, BI&R. To Mike's family,
My deep sympathies for your loss. Mike was a true gentleman and an excellent attorney. As a parent of lacrosse players myself, I saw firsthand his passion for the game and pride in his own family's success. I will miss seeing him at Rivers Club. He was a real class act. Again, my sympathies

June 2, 2011

My prayers and condolances go out to Michael's family, his mother and sister Mary Ellen.
Growing up one house away from Michael as a child has left me nothing but wonderful memories. Michael was like my big brother that I never had. He always had time for me, whether we were playing ball or ensuring that I was always doing the right thing. It has been years since I last saw Michael; but I was always proud of his accomplishments.
Michael was truely exceptional person; a person that had a major impact in my life. Even though I have not seen Michael in years, he was always in my thoughts and will never be forgotten. I will always be glad that I grew up with him.

Mike was my mother's cousin (Sandra Manzo Whitlock) and he was kind enough to welcome me to Pittsburgh when I first arrived to study at Duquesne University. Just wanted to let my Manzo relatives know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mike was a light, a beacon, a guiding star that I followed from west Scranton, to the halls of Scranton Central high school, to Old Nassau, to the profession he loved, and to Pittsburgh. He was a true American idol for me and many others. I wish I would have told him this while he walked among us, but I know he hears me now. A light in me is extinguished with his passing. Mike may have left this earthly ball, but he will not be forgotten.

Dear Mrs. Manzo and family: I am profoundly saddened to hear of Mike's death. I was a client of his in a business dispute many years ago, and spent a fair amount of time with Mike. I am a trial lawyer myself (age 60), and I held Mike in the highest regard, both as an attorney and as a warm, sincere, and consummate professional and man. I briefly was a a relatively poor lacrosse player at Bucknell in the late 1960s, thus we had the sport in common. Over the past decade, I have frequently bumped into Mike at political events, and he always treated me warmly, which I greatly appreciated. He was one of the few people in Pittsburgh I would call if I needed to refer someone to the best lawyer in a particular field, and he was gracious in always helping out if possible. The bar in Pittsburgh has truly lost a titan. Your and your family's loss is unimaginable, and you have my deepest sympathy. I just learned of his death, and tommorrow I had committed to spend time with two little boys in our neighborhood for whom I have volunteered to be a big brother. I currently live in Foxburg PA where Rt. 80 crosses the Allegheny north of Pittsburgh, thus I will not make tomorrow's viewings. My apologies, and please know that I am profoundly saddened by Mike's passing.

Kathy and kids,

I learned early this morning of Mike's passing via the generational Berkman Ruslander/Klett Lieber/Buchanan Ingersoll network. Mike had a hand in hiring me to be a litigator back in 1982, only to find out after two days on the job that I had been pirated by Berkman's tax and ERISA department. He was so mad! But genuinely glad for me anyway, as was always the case with Mike.

Such a legal legacy, surpassed only, I think, by his favorite roles as husband and father. I remember trying to talk him into moving to the North Hills area once. Y'all did some home tours and wisely ended up staying in Mt. Lebanon. The North Hills wasn't quite right for his family, he told me. As usual, he was passionately stubborn, and he was right.

Marty and I are deeply saddened by Mike's passing. Please know that y'all are in our thoughts and prayers at this time and always.

Rest in peace, Tiger.

From the little contact I had with Mike you could tell that he loved what he did, was passionate about it, and made sure it was done right. Mike was such a wonderful role model to me when I was a young lawyer. He was a loyal and devoted advocate for his clients, but equally loyal and devoted to his family, and not embarassed for anyone to know it. He had integrity and substance, not just intelligence, and always took the extra time and energy to mentor young lawyers. I am heartbroken that his family and our profession have lost him so young.

I first met Mike when I was a young law student coaching lacrosse in Mt. Lebanon. Back then our lacrosse program was very, very green. In fact, most of us wondered if the sport would ever fly in Mt. Lebanon.

Fast forward 20 years to last week when Mike and I smiled and shook hands in the bleachers during yet another Mt. Lebanon WPIAL Championship run - a Championship due in large part to Mike's commitment to the youth programs in Mt. Lebanon.

I know a lot of people looked up to Mike but sadly most of us never had the chance to tell him so. He probably wouldn't have wanted to hear it any way. Thankfully, the image that I have of Mike from last week will stay with me for a long time - classic blue suit, white shirt, striped tie, rock-hard chin, few words but an approving smile and always a firm handshake. No nonsense. A man's man if there ever was one.

I am so saddened by the news of Mike's death. I have known him for over 38 years and worked with him for 35 of those years. I will always remember him as a gentle and kind person who always had time to sit and talk with you. The last time I saw Mike was at my husband's funeral last July. He was a person who was always there when you were at your lowest to show his support. I know that he will be greatly missed because of his impact he left on all that he knew. My prayers and sympathy are with the Manzo family and would like to leave with you a favorite quote of mine. "If love could have saved him, he would have lived forever." Always remember him with a smile, not a tear.
