MARY MALONEY Obituary
86, died with grace and dignity, on March 21, 2012 at Friendship Village in Upper St. Clair. Mary Dee, a very talented writer, attended the University of Pittsburgh and wrote a weekly article about campus news and happenings for the "Pittsburgh Post Gazette." She continued her writing in the form poetry and many looked forward to her Christmas musings. In September 2010, Mary Dee lost her beloved husband of 62 years Thomas J. Maloney. From their earliest days together Tom and Mary Dee were partners in business and in life. They started by selling "Rawleigh" products door to door. In 1955, with a young and growing family, Tom and Mary Dee took the great leap and opened The Card Centers, a chain of Hallmark greeting card stores located in Pittsburgh. Mary Dee's contribution to the success of the business was as gift buyer and a display artist. Mary Dee will be remembered for her devotion to the Catholic faith and her embodiment of selflessness. Her generous heart and spirit allowed her to help so many that were in physical or spiritual need. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by her children, Colleen (Ed) Williamson, Tim Maloney, Kathy (Dan) Beckovich, Maureen Maloney, Patty (Matt Knoblock) Maloney; her grandchildren, Brian, Kate, Colin and P.J. Williamson, Matthew Beckovich, Keri Nugent, Mary Knoblock; great-grandson, Danny Beckovich; her sister, Catherine (Enrique Fernandez) Lyden; brothers, Joseph (Shirley) Lyden, the late Jack (Bridgett) Lyden; and by her many devoted nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Friends welcome, Friday, March 23, 2012 from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Township. Mass of Christian Burial will take place, March 24, 10:30 a.m. at St. Louise de Marillac Church. Mary Dee was aware that her life was blessed and felt a keen responsibility to help those in need. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in her memory to the Jubilee Soup Kitchen, at Jubilee Association, Inc., P.O. Box 42251, Pittsburgh, PA 15203-0051.

I am so so sorry. I just found out about Mrs. Maloney's passing and am lost for words. She was a wonderful person. My wife and I cherished her. She was just such a wonderful, loving and caring person.

Condolences on the death of Mary Dee. At the very hour of the funeral Mass at St. Louise I assure you of prayer for both Mary and Tom. They were regular visitors here at the Spiritan Center for Sunday Mass for years. Mary was such a dear in caring for Tom as he was failing. After his death she pretty much stopped coming here, as she herself was in decline. They were an inspiration for us. RIP

Mrs. Maloney gave me a job at the Card Center when I was a high school girl and in need of employment. She was so kind to me, giving me gifts for the holidays and otherwise offering me kindness and support.
