ELEANOR SLATER Obituary

SLATER
ELEANOR
1924 to 2014. Eleanor Slater, a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh and a pioneer in advocating for families of the mentally ill, died May 24, 2014, at her home in the village of Shadyside. A graduate of Carrick High School, Eleanor Briggs began what would become a lifetime of volunteerism during World War II, working as a nurse's aide at Montefiore Hospital. She later worked for Welcome Wagon on the South Side, delivered Meals on Wheels, assisted young children in a Head Start program at Beltzhoover school, tutored at the Ellsworth school, and volunteered at Children's Hospital until 2013. Her major contribution to public service began in the mid 1960s, when her daughter began experiencing mental illness. At that time, mental illness was attributed to a child's upbringing, so that in addition to grappling with a child's illness, parents were blamed for causing it. Frustrated at the lack of information from mental health professionals, Mrs. Slater started up the first local support group for families in the Pittsburgh area in 1980. PAMI (Pittsburgh Alliance for the Mentally Ill) was a branch of the national organization NAMI. She was an advocate for decades and taught the weekly NAMI Family-to-Family curriculum for 11 years. Among many public service awards, she received the Jefferson Award and the Dick Jevon Advocacy Award in 2014. She was also an adventurous world traveller who visited more than 30 countries. She is survived by two daughters, Laura Nowakowski of Pittsburgh and Catherine Desjardins of Arlington, MA; three grandchildren, Megan and Tristan Spence, and Dylan Desjardins; and one great-grandchild, Olive Spence. A Memorial Service will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to NAMI of Southwestern PA. Arrangements entrusted to the ANTHONY M. MUSMANNO FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-331-0900.

Seeing Eleanor's photo in my email feed filled my heart with gratitude. She was an amazing pioneer and role model to all of the families challenged with mental illness. I will never forget her.

Eleanor, a friend for 35 years, and what a special friend you were. Any day of the week, I could pop in for a great lunch, and seeing things together -- it was always great fun and stimulating. But the major impact that Eleanor had was in the arena of advocacy for people with mental illness and their families. She was the founder of the first family support group in SW PA, and how her group members appreciated her work. She fought stigma, enriched the field of education for families, and enhanced communication between families and the mental health professionals. And she loved the color blue. Eleanor, I will always think of you when I see certain shades of blue. Kiddo, you will be missed.

(This may be a duplicate because I was sure I added my thoughts on June 2, but since I can't find it, I will have to do it again.)
Eleanor was so very special in so many ways -- she loved people, appreciated nature, and found the joy of experiencing edifferent countries and cultures. However, what will remain in the memories of so many who knew her was the enormous contribution she made to the field of mental health advocacy. She started the first family support group in Western PA, and then remained active with reaching out to family members who were struggling with the pain, confusion, and despair caused by this somewhat mysterious set of illnesses. She will remain an icon in this field.
In addition, she and I had a very delightful friendship for the past 35 years, and I join the many others who will miss her deeply.

Eleanor was an exceptional woman of grace, humility, charm, energy, dedication and humor.Everything she did was just right. She gave of herself to her community, family and friends.
We were close friends for many years. She

Our family will be forever grateful for the support that we received from PAMI. Thanks to Eleanor a community was created that provided education, advocacy, and comfort.
Our sincerest sympathy to her family and friends.

I'm very sorry for your family's loss. My father had nothing but kind words to say when speaking of his cousin.

Prayers to all.

Eleanor came to my office & gently educated me on mental health issues. Because of her & a few other stalwarts I was able to speak with authority on the floor of the state House of Representatives on issues that few of us understood. What a lesson in civic responsibility ! We can trace elements of our current Mental Health Law to Eleanor & a few of her friends. We in Pennsylvania owe Eleanor a debt of thanks & I feel blessed to have known her.

Eleanor was one of the great ones. She and my mom, Rene, had a special friendship and I always considered her part of our family.

Eleanor was a lifelong friend of my mother, Narene Schmitz, and a wonderful friend to our entire family. She was a "class act", lived her life to the fullest, and will be greatly missed.
