To Maggie's family, I so wish I could be there this morning to celebrate the life and work of Maggie Kimmel. Recent surgery precludes my being with you. I met Maggie 17 years ago (when I moved to Pittsburgh) through Beginning with Books and Best Books for Babies, two organizations that valued the art and craft of children's literature and the importance of reading to young children. The work we did together was some of the most valuable and stimulating of my professional life. Our discussions of books - illustrations, language, diversity, poetry, humor, interest, subject matter - were thoughtful, provocative, sometimes heated, and always focused on identifying the best literature for our youngest readers. Maggie led our efforts and was the consummate collaborator. One of our last collaborations was with the Community Food Bank, providing books for children whose parents were picking up food. Our idea was to feed minds as well as bodies. My condolences to your family. Please know that she has left us all far too soon, Mary Ellen Hoy, Fox Chapel

I had the pleasure of meeting Maggie through work. I will truly miss her and our little chats. She had a unique way of knowing just what was needed and did not hesitate to extend herself with comfort and compassion. I will truly miss her being in my life in her own special way. My sincerest sympathy to Maggie's loved ones.

Maggie, or Aunt Maggie to my family, was a fantastic lady--lifelong friend to my mom and godmother to my brother. One of my favorite memories of Aunt Maggie was when I went into a teaching credential program. Maggie was so excited for me to be heading into the profession of teaching children; she sent me her book "For Reading Out Loud" and I still have that book and I have referred to it many times throughout the years. You will be missed by so many here--heaven is lucky to have another star in it.

Sincere sympathy to Maggie's family and friends. The world of children's books has lost a great advocate, friend, historian and teacher. She shared what she knew and inspired the love of books in children of all ages. Maggie, you will be missed. Rest now and read aloud to all the other angels around you.

Dr. Kimmel, thank you for sharing a love of librarianship and children's literature with me. You will be greatly missed, but you will live on forever in the lives of the librarians you helped teach.

With sympathy to Maggie's family and close friends, and in gratitude for the joy and wonder and commitment I found as her student at SLIS.

All of us in the children's book community loved Maggie! How could we not value someone who valued each of us, our work, and, most of all, our audience. Condolences to her family and her legion of friends.

Sincerest condolences to Maggie's family, her dearest friends, and colleagues. . . . .I had the pleasure of knowing Maggie, but not for long enough. She was so interesting, fun, and inspirational! My husband worked with Maggie at one time on protocols for libraries, and he thoroughly enjoyed his time with her. . . . .R.I.P., Maggie, and thank you for all that you have done and for your outstanding career and activism!
