PAULA COOK
Paula died very peacefully at her home in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on February 22, 2017, at the age of 71, after a long illness. A passionate conservationist and horticulturist, Paula served as President of the Garden Club of Allegheny County where she co-founded Botany-In-Action, an organization dedicated to help conserve plants and indigenous botanical knowledge throughout the world. She also served on the boards of Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh and the Amazon Conservation Team, as well as co-founding the Fern Hollow Nature Center in Sewickley. She was a gifted and dedicated gardener who took great pleasure in creating flower gardens, particularly those devoted to attracting butterflies. Daughter of artist Peter Cook, Paula was a superb quilter and used her natural artistic skills to make over 40 extraordinary handmade quilts over her lifetime. She also served on the board of Sewickley Academy and was named Sewickley's Woman of the Year in 2006. Paula is survived by her husband, David, former CEO of H.J. Heinz U.S.A.; her daughter, Heather Reedy of Boulder, Montana, and her husband, John Reedy; her son, D. Sculley of Cambridge, Massachusetts and his wife, Jessica Sculley; three grandchildren, Brigid Reedy, Johnny Reedy and Sofia Sculley; and three brothers, Peter, John and Stephen Cook; as well as a large and amazing family of Cooks and Wiggins. Paula will be remembered as a strong, caring, bright, positive and practical woman who always put the interests of others ahead of herself. Despite so many accomplishments in her life, for Paula, family always came first. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fern Hollow Nature Center, 1901 Glen Mitchell Rd., PO Box 8, Sewickley, PA 15143. A memorial service will be held later in the spring in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Arrangements by SIMONS FUNERAL HOME, INC.

David - My condolences. Paula was a hero to so many and she was a mentor to many students through Botany-In Action. I remember taking her to the Amazon. On that trip she met my student Mike Gilmore and that made all the difference as she became a mentor, funder, and cheerleader of his research in the Amazon which continues to this day. She also funded another of my students, Sushma Shrestha, from Nepal. I feel fortunate to have known her and to have shared a few brief moments with her. Staying with the two of you in your home was very special for me. I can only hope that time and memories will soften the pain of you sorrow. With heartfelt sympathy.

To the Sculley Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

I first met Paula when on the board of Phipps Conservancy and Botanical Gardens over 20 years ago. Her dedication to Botany in Action and many other environmental issues impacting our lives was remarkable. She was always a delight to be with and will be missed.
