Paunie VanOrden Obituary

Paunie Mae Van Orden, 83, of Blackfoot, passed away Friday, July 6, 2018, at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.

Paunie was born Sept. 7, 1934, in Moreland, Idaho, to Daniel Darrow Thomas and Martha Lois England Thomas.

Paunie lived her life in the Blackfoot area. She graduated from Snake River High School in 1952. She then attended college at Ricks College.

On July 6, 1971, she married Larry Van Orden in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Paunie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She and Larry served a full-time mission in the Sidney Australia North Mission. Besides her family and the gospel of Jesus Christ, dance has been one of the most constant things in her life. There are thousands of little girls, now full-grown adults, that still refer to her affectionately as Miss Paunie. After serving her mission, Miss Paunie continued to teach dance until last year. At age 82 she retired, totaling 63 years she influenced the lives of so many young men and women.

Paunie is survived by her children: Karla (Dale) Bergevin, of Taylorsville, Utah; Taunia (Clinton) Wheeler, of Vernal, Utah; Kaye Chalk, of Apache Junction, Arizona; Troy (Kathy) Burgon, of Kansas City, Missouri; Michelle (Tim) Williams, of Pingree, Idaho; Wendy (Mark) Duff, of Mesa, Arizona; and Sevell (Bonnie) Van Orden, of Saratoga Springs, Utah; 38 grandchildren and 83 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings: Cornell (Marlene) Thomas, of Provo Utah; Gaylin (Pam) Thomas, of Manti, Utah; Jolene (Dave) Nissen, of Rexburg; Thane (Colleen) Thomas, of Twin Falls; and Dan (Sandy) Thomas, of Idaho Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Larry Van Orden and Gerald D. Burgon; her parents, Dan and Lois Thomas; her daughter Gayle Blenap; sons-in-law Tom Larsen and Fred Chalk; granddaughter Daphne Larsen; and great-granddaughter Ali Kay Larsen.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Blackfoot West Stake Center, 101 North 900 West. Family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Hawker Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the stake center. Interment will follow services in Riverside-Thomas Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hawkerfuneralhome.com.
