POUGHKEEPSIE - Former President of the Poughkeepsie-Arlington Rotary Club dies at 78

James "Jim" L. Brown, 78, of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at Vassar Brothers Hospital. Jim was born on March 17, 1938 in Long Beach, CA. He graduated from Loyola University of Los Angeles and served two years of active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Ord and Presidio of San Francisco, CA; and Mainz, Germany; followed by five years of reserve duty. On November 20, 1965, he married Kathleen A. Freeman at the Church of St. Gregory Nazianzen in Los Angeles, CA.
Jim worked for the National Park Service for 40 years, an occupation with frequent transfers throughout the country that brought him and his family from the Southwest to the Northeast. They moved to the Hudson Valley in 1987 where Jim served as deputy superintendent at the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites in Hyde Park, NY, for nine years. His last appointment was as senior historian at the Gateway Recreation Area in Staten Island, NY.
Jim was an active Rotarian for 35 years, serving in numerous capacities. Since his retirement he has been an active member of the Poughkeepsie-Arlington Rotary Club serving various roles including president twice, and was awarded the Poughkeepsie-Arlington Club's Rotarian of the Year for 2014-2015. He continued his philanthropic work until his death, serving both Rotary and volunteering steadily at Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, NY, leaving a legacy of contributions to the local community.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kathleen; son, Steven; daughter, Megan; siblings Michael and Yvette; and nephew, Keith Brown. He has one grandchild. He is predeceased by his parents, Roy and Corrine Brown; and his sister in law, Jeannine Brown.
There will be no calling hours.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 12, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church, 20 Carroll St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
