Doylestown, PA - Lorraine Janet Murphy passed away on May 11th at the age of 91. She was born in NYC to John and Margaret Schmalberger. She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Ulrich and a brother, Frederick Schmalberger. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1944 and Ithaca College in 1948.

Her husband, William Murphy, of 35 years predeceased her in 2012. Laurie was previously married to Richard Bennison with whom she had three children who survive her. Muriel Gaw of Verbank, NY, John Bennison and his wife Debbie of Hardinsburg, Kentucky and Mary Filiciotto and her husband Frank of Riegelsville, PA. She is also survived by six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Laurie was loved by all her family.

For most of her life, Laurie lived in Poughkeepsie but moved in the last five years to Doylestown, PA to be near her daughter Mary. At the independent senior living facility where she lived, she was active in swimming, yoga, field trips and volunteering. Laurie taught physical education at Arlington High School from 1965-1987 as well as coached gymnastics and spring track. She was beloved by her students. In Poughkeepsie, Laurie was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling. She loved to travel - China, Russia, Ireland and to many other places. She also looked forward to a vacation at Long Beach Island in the summer. Laurie was a beach bum. Anyone who knew Laurie knew she was always on the go. She never missed an opportunity to socialize and was thought of as a true and loyal friend.

Her life will be celebrated on Saturday, June 9th from 1-3 pm at Doyle's Funeral Home in Poughkeepsie. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind in her name at 611 Granite Springs Rd Yorktown Heights, NY 10598
