Howell LaMotte III

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC - Colonel Louis Howell LaMotte III, a long resident of Hilton Head Island, died peacefully at home on June 12, 2012, surrounded by his family.

He was born December 25, 1921, in East Orange, New Jersey to Lois Gubelman and Louis Howell LaMotte, Jr.

He attended the Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, Connecticut and the Forman School in Litchfield, Connecticut. He later attended George Washington University.

Colonel LaMotte served in the military for more than twenty years, first with the United States Army Air Corps and then in the United States Air Force. In 1955 he joined the International Business Machines in Poughkeepsie, New York, while still serving in the Air Force. At IBM he worked as an assistant to the Director of Research, managed the IBM Country Club and Homestead Education facility, and then retired as the Manager of Special Services.

In Poughkeepsie he was a member of the Amrita Club, the Poughkeepsie Tennis Club, and served as President on the Board of Vassar Brothers Hospital. He was a founding member of the Yacht Club of Hilton Head, and a member of the South Carolina Yacht Club. Upon retirement, he owned several small businesses including The Brass Lamp in Poughkeepsie. After moving to Hilton Head, he partnered in other small businesses which included Carolina Aviation, Lighthouse Yacht Sales, and The Tatler Gallery.

He was a life-long member of the United States Power Squadron, a sixty year member of The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and The Military Officers Association of America. He was a private pilot and avid boater that many referred to and knew as "Red". For years he enjoyed flying his family from Poughkeepsie to their beach house in Avalon, New Jersey.

Red and his wife Anne loved boating and spent much of their time exploring the Hudson, Chesapeake, Inter-coastal Waterway, and much of Florida and the Keys, aboard their boat "Tender Anne".

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Louis Howell LaMotte, Jr., and his brother Peter LaMotte, MD.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anne Shryock LaMotte, two daughters, Elisabeth (Libby) LaMotte-Moore (Michael), of Bluffton, Lee LaMotte Anderson (Raymond), of Hilton Head, and four grandchildren, Lance Corporal Carl Raymond Anderson, USMC of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and Elisabeth Grace, Caroline Victoria and Lois Marie Anderson, all of Hilton Head Island. Also survived by his sister Noel LaMotte Adams of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, his brother Thomas J. LaMotte of Bedford, New York, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loyal caregiver of twenty years, Alice Rowland, his beloved nurse Jane Walker, and his Welsh Corgi, Barnaby. A waterside memorial service was held at 3 PM, Saturday, June 16th, at the South Carolina Yacht Club with a reception to follow.
