Modena - Raymond L. Gilman, 86, of Modena, NY, formerly of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. passed away June 8, 2018 at the New Paltz Center for Rehab and Nursing. He was born on August 20, 1931 to the late Lillian White Gilman and Charles Gilman in Buchanan N.Y. He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel Gilman, his youngest son, Paul Francis Gilman, brothers James (KIA WWII), Henry, Don and sisters, Inza Strosser and Rachel Grasso.

Ray is survived by sons Raymond J. (Nancy), James (Jerilyn), John (Carol); daughter Debra (John) Cassidy; his sister, Rhoda Menga; his stepdaughters, Linda Martin, Lois Crum, Lorraine (George) Nickell, Lori (Shahran) Daneshvar, seven grandchildren and three great grand-children survive him.

A gifted athlete, Ray starred at football and track while attending Hendrick Hudson High School. He served in the U.S. Army in post war Germany. His career path took him from the Algonquin Gas Transmission Company as a northeast line foreman to the New York Telephone Company as a telephone installer and repairman throughout Westchester County until his retirement in 1991.

As an avid trout fisherman, he enjoyed fishing the streams throughout the region. His love of college football was his passion and expertise. Ray was most recognized and complimented by the green Irish beret he always wore. His favorite saying, imparted to him as a youngster was, "Beautiful day, son, remember, we're only here for a visit". A special thanks from our family to cousin, Gioia Grasso Cattabridga, for the weekly cards, letters, thoughts and love for our father.

In appreciation to those that provided support throughout Ray's journey, we thank Sue and Tommy Keon, Shawnee and Kim, and the providers of care and comfort at the nursing home.

A Graveside Service will be held at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Putnan Valley, NY, on June 19 at 1:00pm. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the .
