Poughkeepsie, NY - Thomas R. Murphy, 75, a long time resident of Poughkeepsie and husband of Elizabeth A. Murphy passed away unexpectedly at home on July 7th, 2018.



Thomas was the youngest of 6 children born on October 18, 1942 in Kenmore, NY to the late Raymond and Catherine Murphy. He graduated from RPI with a BS in Electrical Engineering and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He married Elizabeth on April 24th, 1965 in Schenectady, NY



He began working for IBM and was a manager when he retired at age 50. He was also active in local politics. He served on the Town of Poughkeepsie planning board for 10 years, as councilman of the 5th ward and went on to serve as the Town of Poughkeepsie Supervisor from 1994 to 1999.



He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth, as well as 3 children Timothy (Carolyn) Murphy of East Hampton, CT, Deborah (Edward) Kennedy of Newburgh, NY and Christopher (Lisa) Murphy of Lagrangeville, NY, and 8 grandchildren Kyle (Katie) Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, John Kennedy, Kira Murphy, Kate Murphy, Jenna Murphy, Jordan Murphy, and Amber Murphy. He is also survived by his brother Gerald Murphy of Wesley Chapel, FL and his sister Jean Smith of Kenmore, NY. In addition to his parents Thomas was predeceased by his brothers James Murphy, Raymond Murphy, and sister Eileen Reed.



He regularly attended mass at both Mt. Alvernia in Wappingers Falls and St. Martin de Porres in Poughkeepsie, NY



Thomas had a profound joy for life with many and varied interests. He appreciated the sunrise on Schroon Lake, summer in Ocean City, his sailboat at White's Marina, and teaching his kids to ski at Gore Mountain. His research into family genealogy led him on multiple trips to Ireland and Scotland. His love for food, music, nature and his family will be his legacy.



Calling hours will be held Friday August 24th, 2018 from 2pm-6pm at William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A mass of christian burial will be held at 11am Saturday August 25th, 2018 at St. Martin de Porres Parish 118 Cedar Valley rd. Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Internment will follow at Calvary Cemetery Mary, Our Mother Columbarium Cremation Garden.
