Alfred F. Long

Poughkeepsie, NY - Alfred F. Long, 77, passed away November 8, 2012 at his daughters' residence in Hyde Park, NY. He was born January 4, 1935 to Walter K. and E. Ruth Frantz Long in Center Valley, PA. A resident of Poughkeepsie since 1962, he had previously resided in Center Valley, PA. On September 7, 1963 Alfred married Jacqueline M. Walsh at the Christ Lutheran Church in Allentown, PA. His wife predeceased him on March 29, 1979. Alfred attended Coopersburg H.S. and Penn State. He was employed as a Programmer at IBM in Poughkeepsie until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the First Lutheran Evangelical Church. Alfred served in the US Army in 1957. He was an avid golfer and bowler, enjoyed traveling to Alaska, watched a baseball game at midnight with no lights and flew above the Arctic Circle. Alfred is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Mark & Julie Long of Rhinebeck, NY; daughter and son-in-law Nancy & Scott Compton of Hyde Park, NY; grandchildren Christian & Rosemary Compton and Nathaniel & Jacob Long and several nieces & nephews. He was also predeceased by three brothers: Walter, Donald & James Long. Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 16, 2012 from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm at Wm. G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Services will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 12:00 pm at First Lutheran Evangelical Church, 325 Mill St., Poughkeepsie, NY. Burial will follow at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, NY.
