Laima Celmins
Rhinebeck - Laima Celmins, 77, of Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck, died Saturday, June 25th.
Laima was born in Riga, Latvia, on March 19, 1939. In 1944 her family escaped war-torn Latvia and resided in displaced persons camps in Germany until 1947. In 1947 they came to New York City, where she later attended The Bronx High School of Science.
After briefly residing in Rosendale, NY, she moved to Lagrange, NY (1965-1976), briefly to Rosendale, NY, and then to Kingston, NY (1976-2010). During those years, she worked as a secretary at New York State Life Insurance and then at the Ulster County JTPA Offices. She entered Ferncliff Nursing Home in 2010.
Laima enjoyed spending her time gardening, tending houseplants, reading, and participating in Kingston Community Radio. She had fond memories of vacations in Sound Beach, LI, NY, as a child.
Survivors include her sister, Mara Puspurs, of Loudonville, NY; her son and his wife, Erik and Mechelle Kusko, of Stanford, NY; and her granddaughter, Becky Kusko of Cambridge, MA; and her granddaughter and her husband, Nicole and Aaron Stepnoski of Furlong, PA. She is predeceased by her mother and father, Helga Hartman and Ervins Celmins, and her partner, John Gould.
A Committal Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 2nd, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Wurtemberg, with the Reverend Mark D. Isaacs officiating. Interment will be at the Latvian Memorial Park in Tannersville, NY, at 12:00 on October 9th.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck.
