John Cahill Obituary

John Cahill

Iowa City - You are invited to join a celebration of the life of John E. Cahill who went home to his Savior on December 13, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 20th at 10 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. The family will greet friends from 4 -7 PM on Wednesday, December 19th at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a vigil service will be held at 7 PM. Bring stories to share, good memories and maybe even a drink in his honor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or American Cancer Society.

Survivors include Nancy, the love of his life and wife for 56 years; four sons, Mark (Sharon) of Half Moon Bay, CA, and their children, Jordan, Jeremy and Marissa, Michael (Michelle) of Wheaton, IL, and their children, John, Jessica, Connor and Caden, Stephen (Laura) of Lombard, IL, and their children, Nichol, Meghan and Christopher, Kevin Cahill of Champaign, IL; one daughter, Katie Cahill of Vernon Hills, IL and three sisters, Mary Ellen Steckly of Iowa City, IA, Pat (Robert) Christensen of Carroll, IA, and Elyse Lewis of Iowa City, IA.

John loved his children and was so proud of them.

John was born in Iowa City on June 25, 1938. He attended elementary and high school at St. Mary's in Iowa City. John received his college degrees from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa and master's degree from the University of Iowa.

John's 39 years in teaching and school administration were spent in Illinois. Prior to retirement, his last fifteen years were spent as Superintendent of Schools in Lincolnwood, Illinois. He was lucky because each position was never a job for him. He loved what he was doing and the people that worked with him.

John and Nancy returned to Iowa City in 1999 after years of working in Illinois. As they say, "You can take the boy out of Iowa, but you can't take Iowa out of the boy." All remember John's off beat, sometime strange sense of humor, his favorite team, the Iowa Hawkeye's, Iowa City Eagle Post #695, his enjoyment of travel, cruises, anything Irish and Christmas which was his favorite time of the year. Other than his professional life, he never took himself too seriously and enjoyed every day of his journey through life.

John played on two state basketball teams at St. Mary's High School and was a member of the St. Ambrose University Basketball Hall of Fame. Many don't know but there is a street named after him in Lincolnwood, Illinois.

Nancy and John walked hand-in-hand wherever they went. "I love her more now than the day we were married, if that is possible. She's the best thing that ever happened to me. I have gone away but we will meet again. Be happy for me, I have gone home to our Lord."

John is preceded in death by his parents, William (Bill) and Wilma Cahill and brothers Raymond, David, Jimmy, and sister, Rosie Marie.
