Wally Schwank Obituary

Wally Schwank, 96, of Lake Forest, Calif. and Polson, Mont., formerly of Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, died Monday Feb. 2, 2009, at a care center in Lake Forest from blood clots. His body was cremated. Services will be at a later date in Montana, with his ashes scattered in the Montana Mountains.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; a son, Jock; and two daughters, Jan and Jill.
Also surviving are his grandchildren.
Wally was a 1934 graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids and coached high school football in several Iowa towns. In 1945, he earned an M.A. degree in Physical education, and in 1955, a Ph.D., both from the University of Iowa. Wally coached football at the UI during the Evashevski era, at Coe from 1956-1959 and at South Dakota State in 1960. From 1961 until his retirement in 1980, Wally was director of health, physical education and athletics at the University of Montana. He was awarded several citations for outstanding professional accomplishments.
As representatives of the University of Montana, Wally and Helen, to whom he was married for 72 years, traveled extensively over the world. They maintained a lovely spot on the shore of Flathead Lake in Polson, Mont., and wintered in California in their retirement years.
