John Hlavac Obituary

Hlavac, John

DOB 08/30/1952: On July 24, 2013 the world lost a very talented, loving & caring man who would give of himself to all he met. John was just a few weeks short of his 61st Birthday when he suddenly passed from a pulmonary embolism. He went to join his best friend and Father, Jerry Hlavac and Our Lord in heaven. He is survived by his friend, companion and loving wife of 34 years Tina (Connelly) Hlavac; his only daughter Jackie Hlavac and her longtime companion Jason Buchta, Johnson City; and of course his pride and joy, grandson & best buddy Gavin Hlavac. He is also survived by his loving mother Doris Hlavac who spent ½ her time with John & Tina and the other ½ her time with John's sister & brother-in-law Diane (Hlavac) Buckley and Bill Buckley in North Port, FL. John is also survived by his brother & sister-in-law who "always needed John's help". Jim & Katie (Scott) Hlavac of Endwell, brother-in-law James Connelly, brothers and sisters in-law Kathy & Tony Citriniti, Mary & Dell Boyle, and a special cousin, Jerry Stulir. He had many special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly and they loved his loud, silly talents and sense of humor. John was one of the first local Body Builders which was a passion he carried on throughout his life. John's gift of Art was handed down from his Dad; he was always working on a project, usually for other people. John loved anything with wheels and could usually fix anything, which was a wonderful gift to the rest of us. John worked as a maintenance supervisor at SUNY Binghamton for 25 years where his crew truly loved and missed him after his retirement 3 years ago. We love you and miss you John and though it is not ours to understand why you were taken away from us so suddenly, we will continue to try and find strength here on earth through faith and through the love of our family and friends that you were so much the heart of. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 9AM from the Allen Memorial Home, Inc., 511-513 E. Main Street, Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Vincent de Paul/Blessed Sacrament Church, Vestal at 10AM. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home on Monday 4-7PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to an ITF educational fund for John's beloved grandson Gavin Hlavac at a Visions Federal Credit Union.

John will be remembered as the gentile, kind spirited man he was. Always the gentleman even when we all were young. John was one of the group of guys my brother Joey hung out with. He was not your north side kind of guy he was not rough and didn’t act like a tough guy. He had manners, and he was a nice person. I’m sorry Tina for your loss. John was special and so are you. God Bless you on your journey without your soul mate. You are in our thoughts, and our hearts.

Dear Tina, Jackie, Gavin and Family,
No one can take the place of a loving, giving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and only one who has had a like sorrow can understand the grief that you are experiencing.
Although sympathy is only a small consolation, even from the hearts of those who share your sorrow, I want you to know how saddened I'm of John's sudden death. He was a wonderful man and a great friend. He was the best! I will always remember him with fondness.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all and I extend my deepest condolences to you and your family.
With Sympathy,

I met John many years ago through Bob Kropp. His smile, sense of humor and caring nature were so easy to recall when I was told of his passing. Reading through all these expressions of sympathy he obviously made a difference in this world. What a rare and special soul. Please take comfort in that and all the warm and loving memories you hold in your hearts. Rest in peace John...

To the Hlavac family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I went to school with John, but ran into him with his grandson at the Duggout a while back. You could just see the love he had for his family. He will be sorely missed. My prayers to you all.

Jackie and family, There are no words take away the pain I'm sure you are all going through at this point. He obviously meant so much to you as he did to so many others. It was easy to see how much he loved you and loved life in general. I had the pleasure of knowing him through working under him for a brief time at SUNY years ago but have since been lucky enough to get to know other members of the family he meant so much to. Gavin, always know that your Grampa will be by your side no matter what and next time the snow starts to fall, he'll be putting ideas in your head of what shape to build next. May your grief be small and your memories last forever of a wonderful man taken away way too soon.

Dear Hlavac family,
It's hard to find words to describe how shocked and saddened we were when we heard of John's passing. We will miss him riding by our house on his bike with Sherman in tow...or zipping by on scooters with Gavin. He was truly a nice man and heaven has gained an extraordinary angel. Please try to find comfort in knowing that he is in a beautiful place watching over you all. God bless the Hlavac family.

Dear Tina, Jackie, Gavin, Diane, Jim, and Doris,

What can you say at a time like this about someone who has been like a second brother? The best friend of my brother from the "old days," and even present-day, we have a lifetime of memories with John. There are not enough words that could adequately express the devasting loss we all feel. John was kind and gentle, always full of joy. Just to see him coming brought a smile to your face, because you knew there was always going to be a chuckle about something! And the chuckle would always turn into full blown (and loud) laughter!! How could someone with so much love and joy in his heart, and who meant so much to his family and friends be taken so soon? We have lost him, but all he meant to all of us will never be lost or forgotten. Pat and I truly feel your pain and sorrow, and extend our deepest sympathy and love.

I met John and the Hlavac family when I worked as a care giver for Doris and Jerry. John was a devoted family man, a talented artist - from Gavins art projects to shrubs. He loved all animals, especially Sherman and respected and cared about people - always willing to help. He was an unusually kind man. After the initial shock of his passing, my first thought was that he would be with Jerry again. My prayers to you Tina and your family.

Our deepest sympathy on the passing of one of this world's true gentlemen. John was one of those people who just lit up the space he was in. He was so enthusiastic about things he was doing, or working on, but even more whatever YOU were working on, or was otherwise important to you. He was a great listener and held enormous compassion for others. John was one of those people who you didn't have to see every day to understand his worth and friendship. If you saw John six months from the last you saw him, he would remember and inquire right where we left off all that time ago. He remembered because he cared. Although times will be rough without him, he left a huge loving memory that will see you through. We will deeply miss John. Rest in Peace my friend.

John was my supervisor, the last 3 years I worked at SUNY. All the things written and said about him are true, and I can honestly say he was the best boss I ever had. He had no problem pitching in to help those who worked under him, and the work atmosphere was relaxed and warm. His sense of humor made every night a great experience. He talked about his family all the time, and it was clear how proud he was of them. John was just a great all around guy, and its shocking that he was taken to young. My sincere condolences to his family, and my with that your wonderful memories of John will sustain you in this time of grief, and in the days ahead. RIP John....job well done.
