Gisela Harnisch Dewees Obituary
Gisela Harnisch Dewees

Binghamton - In loving memory 1925 - 2019

We are extremely saddened by the passing of our beloved mother Gisela H. Dewees, age 94, on Wednesday October 2, 2019 at home with her son Michael at her bedside, after her brave but losing battle against pneumonia complications. Gisela, a former Binghamton community, anti-war and civil rights leader, was born near Berlin, Germany. Her and her Berlin-family's brave battle as Lutheran NAZI-resisters against Hitler, and their sufferings during WWII is grippingly documented in her pre-US life's account "OUT OF STEP (My Young Life As A Resister In Nazi Germany)" DeForest Press, 2005. Her book is dedicated to her beloved pre-deceased brother Hans Reinhard (tragic end-WWII-victim), her sons Michael and John Garrett, her daughter Barbara Christina, her sister Odina (pre-deceased) and Odina's daughters Anna Regula (pre-deceased) and Christiane. She was rescued in 1945 from a totally destroyed Germany by a wonderful GI Theodore John Dewees (pre-deceased), brought to Binghamton, New York by him, where they married and where she was accepted and invited to a fresh US-start by his wonderful Binghamton-family. Significant members of that family surviving her are her sister-in-law and friend Fiske-Dewees-Hanson with sons Dana & Jason, 4 nieces, including close friend Rebecca-Launt-Turkow with 3 sons/1 daughter, and her nephews Johnny and Philip Launt and their families. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jenn, Carrie and Sage (John Garrett's) and Liam and Shaina (Barbara Christina and William McMann's) plus five great-grand children. Also by daughters-in-law Mary Alice Dewees and Maria Elena Dolker. Gisela's memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26, at 6 PM at Binghamton's Unitarian Universalist Church on 183 Riverside Drive (post-service refreshments on-site). In lieu of flowers, donations to Gisela's favorite charity, an anti-white-supremacy legal organization, would be appreciated: Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104. Arrangements made by AEGIS CREMATION & FUNERAL SERVICES, 196 Clinton St. Binghamton, New York.
