Bro. Vernon Jordan was a real "change agent" and an Omega Psi Phi Fraternity man and trailblazer that influenced a lot of young fraternity black men in the 1970s. He lived manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift. And when we say our last good bye.....

My wife, Ede Holiday, and I offer our sincerest condolences to Vickie and the entire Jordan family. I have known Vernon, Shirley, Vickie as a youngster, and his dear mother since Vernon headed the Voter Education Project in Atlanta. He loaned me his bar study materials when it was time for my bar exam. Much later we came to know Ann as well. Vernon has been a marvelous friend for us and so many others throughout that time. He was a steadfast advocate for appointment of minorities to important governmental positions, both in the Executive Branch and Judiciary, during the Carter Administration and thereafter. He was a tremendous influence to his friend Judge Griffin Bell at the Justice Department, often joining him and his aides for lunch in the small dining room next to the AG’s office. I was fortunate to see him often over the next forty years in Washington and New York, including several matters in which he had involved me as a lawyer. I watched him befriend and serve as an adviser to national political leaders of both parties, and his strong advocacy for the benefit of the Alfalfa Club of which he once served as president that brought leaders of both parties and other national leaders together for an evening of good humor and fellowship. He was one of a kind who gave of himself to others time and again. He was one of a kind, a giant, and will be missed as he takes his new position nurturing individual growth and bringing people together in heaven.

I have always believed that it was Vernon Jordan's speech to President Jimmy Carter that inspired Carter to encourage all Cabinet members to bring more minorities into higher levels in the U.S. government. Shortly thereafter, the Department of State, through its U.S. Information Agency, offered me a chance to interview for one of just 20 openings that year in the United States Diplomatic Corp. I ended up being accepted and spent 27 years as a member of the U. S. Diplomatic Corp as a foreign service officer. Thank you Mr. Jordan. Patricia D. Norman

I was a Stenographer when Mr. Jordan joined the National Urban League upon the 1971 passing of Whitney Young in Lagos, Nigeria. I worked in the Public Relations Department with Mr. Jordan's speech writer, Dan Davis.

Along with everyone at the League, I cried when Mr. Jordan was shot in 1980 by the same individual who also shot and paralyzed Larry Flint in 1978. How ironic that Mr. Flynt and Mr. Jordan deceased within almost a month of each other. In my position of being the Benefits Assistant in 1980, I cringed each time I read Mr. Jordan's medical report and

My personal memory of Mr. Jordan is -- after the 1977 New York City Con Edison Power System Blackout, our apartment was totally consumed by fire (me, my husband and our two daughters ages 11 and 8; one almost lost her life ftom smoke inhalation and the other one was burnt on her hand). The fire resulted in the electrical wiring in the walls combusting after power was restored to the apartment the next day.

Mr. Jordan provided us with beds and other furnishings, books and clothing for the girls, custom suits and other clothing for my husband, who was hard to fit since he was a tall guy.

Another great memory is -- my desk faced the elevator and one day the doors opened and Michael Jackson, his entourage and Mr. Jordan got off and staff members were comprising Michael Jackson. I kept typing because Mr. Jordan's weekly column "To Be Equal" was due to go to press at the end of the day and he was scheduled to give a speech the next day in Washington, D. C. Michael was fascinated by my typing speed and my shorthand. He asked how fast did I type, what was I typing and how fast did I take shorthand

Since all of Mr. Jordan's speeches were archived after his speaking engagements, he took this opportunity to ask about some notes he had scribbled on his last speech assumed I would go to the files to pull out the speech. I was always prepared for Mr. Jordan forgetting to take notes of something of importance he scribbled on most of these speeches. Sometimes I would have to read the notes upside down to make sense of them (my mentor, Faith Williams, used to tell Mr. Jordan I did the New York Times crossword puzzles upside down, backwards and in ink). I made a point to record those notes on my steno pad. The Michael Jackson episode was Mr. Jordan's first time being made aware of my note/scribbling recordkeeping operating system -- lol). Michael advised when he returned home, he was going to have his staff do the same with his "scribblings". Mr. Jordan told him to contact me if he needed guidance. Aah -- a classic moment from a classy, much respected, employee-appreciative (of all staff) Skipper.

REST ON. Like one of your favorite sayings: "Just like a tree planted by the water, I shall not be moved!!!

Our family is deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend Vernon. We will especially miss sharing Gullah -related literature that he always enjoyed. He was a most admired standard bearer for the pursuit of true justice in our democracy. And I shall never forget how he generously took time and honored me with a moving speech at my retirement from Penn Center at St Helena Island in 2004. We shall always remember that Vernon could read.

I worked for Vernon Jordan when he was head of the Voter Education Project. He funded a voter registration campaign which I headed in New Orleans during the summer of 1967. We increased the black voter registration sufficiently enough to assure a first primary victory for Dutch Morial for a seat in the state House of Representation, which made Morial the first African American elected to the legislature in the 20th century. I last saw him when he received the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP. There has not been a recipient who was more humble and gracious in accepting this prestigious award. His services to our nation have numerous and legendary. He will be missed, but long remembered.

Black and white America lost a great man with the passing of Vernon E. Jordan. Jr. Vernon, a close friend and mentor to me, was an iconic civil rights leader, a political sage, who counseled presidents of all parties with wisdom and common sense, and a business voice that had a seat at the table with the most powerful leaders in the U.S., if not the world. Most of all, Vernon Jordan was a giant of a man whose voice commanded respect, demanded attention; and, just at the right moment, made humor and wit in a wonderful way to show that his genius came from overcoming odds that left no scars, but gave him purpose and joy in helping his people and his country. He will be greatly missed.

How fitting that Vernon made it through the month devoted to Black History, which in many ways his life embodied.
From waiting tables in his mother's Atlanta restaurant to fighting for voting rights to advising U.S. presidents.
Covering him for Newsweek, I went both to the White House and home to his house for my first taste of grits, a reminder of the roots he never forgot.
It was a pleasure and an honor to know him.
