Matthew Walsh Obituary

WALSH, Matthew Joseph Of Rohnert Park, passed away early on the morning of July 6, 2001, attended by his loving wife and family. He was 43 years old. Born in 1958 in San Mateo, CA to John Walsh Sr. and Joan Walsh, Matt is loved by his wife Allyson, son Andrew and daughter Claire. He is also survived and loved by his brother John Walsh, sister-in-law Carmen and nephew James; brother Mark Walsh, sister-in-law Cathy, nephew Johnny, niece Colleen and brother James Walsh, all of Santa Rosa; brother Luke Walsh of Healdsburg and sister Maureen Shandobil, brother-in-law Randy, nephews Ben and Baxter of Alameda, CA; aunt Mary Sarris of Santa Rosa; cousins Steve of Healdsburg and Greg of Los Angeles; sister-in-law Laurie Andrews, brother-in-law Bill, nephew Zach of Eureka; brother-in-law Scott Banks of New York City, and niece Willow of Santa Cruz and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins by the dozens. After serving his apprenticeship he became an accomplished journeyman carpenter working on many projects in Sonoma County. He was a loyal trade unionist and an active member of Carpenters Local 751. He worked for many contracting firms during his 22 years in the building trade including Roy Nonella Construction, Petersen Builders, Inc., and Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio. Matt studied martial arts at Studio Duvall in Santa Rosa, earning his black belt in Tang Soo Do. A devoted family man, Matt was a member of the Rancho Cotate Football Boosters and served as coach and team dad on numerous Rohnert Park youth sports teams. He was always proud of his childrens’ accomplishments and took great joy in tending to his family. He was often referred to as Mr. Mom, and liked nothing better that to have friends and family join him for backyard barbecues and 49er games. An outgoing and personable man, Matt was most loved for his sense of humor. He was a loyal and deeply devoted friend. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent medical care Matt received during his illness. In particular, Dr. Gary Johanson, Dr. Ian Anderson, the staff and nurses at Redwood Regional Oncology Center, 3 West, Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph VNA, and St. Joseph Palliative Care Unit. Matt had an abiding respect for his fellow man and believed in building community. He lived this commitment and devotion to others by simple acts. In lieu of gifts or donations, the family asks that you do the same by extending your hand to others. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church, 398 10th Street, Santa Rosa. Even though Matt has been gone from us for quite some time, I still think of him often and miss his great smile and sense of humor. Matt was a wonderful person and I miss watching him as a loving father with his children.

This holiday season must be terribly sad for those who are used to seeing Matt.

I saw a handsome young man last night who looked so much like Matt, I had to stop and think -- I thought Matt was sending a message for all those who are missing him or think of him from time to time...

The message is personal for each of us. Whatever you think Matt is telling you now is really what Matt is telling you! The mind does not cease even though the body is no longer here!

He still has that smile on his face. I know we all feel it!

Blessings to you all!

Matt was truly someone you could look up to, especially from my heighth. I remember meeting him out in the field at work. He was a diligent worker. His work ethic is ne to be remembered. A friend like Matt can never be forgotten. My wife met Matt through his brother John and wife Carmen, she remember's him for his silly humor and positive outgoing attitude. His memory will live on for quite some time to come. He will be missed, however, certainly never forgotten.

Matt Walsh is a man who I always have and always will look up to. Proud, confident and trustworthy, if you needed him he was there-period! Although my heart is heavy with the loss of such a great friend, the memories of his spirit and smile will live on.

There are people in one's life that you can never forget. Then there are the ones you wish you never knew. But Matt will be a person I'll never forget and wish that the others would be more like him. Although I haven't seen Matt for some time, I would remember the great times I had with him and his sense of humor. He was an influential friend in my life and his memory will be one I'll never forget.

The Walsh brothers have always been dear to my heart. I am saddened that Matt has left us so early in his life. He had a way of making people feel special, no matter how long he knew them, no matter how much time spent apart. My life has been enriched knowing Matt. I know his big heart and arms are wrapped around all of us who mourn him. I can feel the warmth of his smile as I write this...Blessings!

It is so hard to say good-bye to such a dear friend. You were truely a man of character and of your word. Your sense of humor was always right on que. Your devotion to your family was outstanding.

We will miss you so much. You will forever live in our hearts.

One day I (Dave) will join you in heaven and ask you "do you like basketball?"

Matt has been a strong and true friend to my brother since their teens. He couldn't have asked for a better friend. I know Matt will be sorely missed, but forever in the hearts of those who knew him.

Anyone who was fortunate enough to know Matt knows what a special person he is. His strong sense of family and love of his family. How he could make anyone laugh with his sense of humor. How he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Matt was truly a man to look up too. We are all going to miss you so much. You will forever be in our memories. Love, The Christiansens

Matt Walsh was a charter-member of the Studio Duvall Brotherhood. He will be remembered as a strong martial artist, a great friend, a commited family man, and an excellent human being. His smile was beautiful, his laughter was contagious and his jokes were endless. We will miss you, "Jethro"...."catch you on the rebound...."

Matt was always special to us. He was our son's best friend from Junior High. He always had a smile and a kind word even as a young kid. He helped our son when he was needed most and we will always keep him in our hearts.
