Vern Drehmel Obituary

Passionately loved life, sports, politics, music, the arts, food - and most of all his family. He died peacefully on November 1, 2008, surrounded with love. Vern is survived by his wife, Robin, children David, Debbie and Lisa, sons-in-law Gary and Mike, grandchildren Sara, Jeff, and Aston, and former wife, Laurie. Born in Germany in 1929, his earliest memories were of the terror of Nazism. Imprisoned in Terezin and Auschwitz, he attributed his survival to luck, friendship, a fierce will to live, and a belief in the American ideals of liberty and freedom. Following escape at the age of 17, he settled in Boston, played Varsity Soccer at Harvard ('52) and earned his MA in Social Work at Boston University ('54). From 1962-68, Vern directed Stanford's Center for autistic children. For the next 30 years, alongside wife Robin, he counseled adolescents, children and families in San Mateo, before retiring to The Sea Ranch. Despite the challenges of his early years, Vern chose optimism over pessimism, friendship over isolation, and hope over fear. Through the Daniel Exhibit and classroom visits, Vern shared his experience to engage students in conversation about mankind's capacity for both great atrocity and humanity. Vern will be remembered for his extraordinary ability to connect with people through his warmth, charm, empathy, wisdom and humor. He was adored and leaves a deep void. Vern will be forever missed. Donations may be made in his memory to your favorite charity.

Gone back and forth with pain of posting-I was 9 when I started seeing Robin...didn´t know they shared an office but always remember him always coming out to say hello while I waited. In 46 and have never forgotten them either of them and remember them fondly

Dear Robin and Family,

I send my deep sympathy to you. I was saddened to learn of Vern's death. I am so grateful for Vern's compassionate counsel and support through the darkest chapters of my life journey! Though he maintained appropriate "clinical boundries", his caring, empathy and humanity were very present. He was a major positive influence in my personal and professional growth.

Robin, you and Vern also counseled my oldest son.

I am so thankful that Vern was such an important part of my life; I remember both of you with affection.

In gratitude,
Gary West

Dear Robin and family:

You may not remember me and my family but I and my children, Mark and Lori, certainly remember both Vern and you. Vern (and I believe you were also involved) counseled my son for a period of time after my divorce in 1967 and Aline Bier counseled my daughter. At the time, I don't believe you and Vern were married yet. I have always appreciated the help you all gave my family. We send our deepest sympathy to you and your family.

(Sorry that I mispelled Aline Bier's last name in my first e-mail as the correct spelling is Bier.)

I have never met Mr. Drehmel, but I read his obituary in the San Francisco Chronicle and was truly moved by his story. I have been going through a very difficult time after the loss of my husband and I was very moved by his courage and his belief in teaching others and most importantly his belief in hope over fear. I am so sorry for your loss, I am sure you miss him greatly.

We were privileged to know Vern. He was an inspiration to us for his smile, warmth, humor and tenacity. Our deepest sympathy to Robin and his children and grandchildren.
Sorry, we did not see notice until today.
