William Babula
May 19, 1943 - March 22, 2021
William Babula passed away on March 22, 2021, at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Rosa with his family at his side. He was formerly a professor of Shakespeare and the dean of Arts and Humanities at Sonoma State University for over 30 years. During that time, he wrote five mystery novels and several plays which were performed around the country. He was an avid sports fan, traveler and Jeopardy player. But most importantly, a loving father and devoted husband. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Karen, his son Jared, his daughter Joelle Butler and son-in-law John Butler.
Private services are planned.

It's impossible to imagine a more ideal Dean for a School of Arts and Humanities than Bill Babula. As a creative person himself, he understood the creative nature of the Departments under his supervision and exercised his authority as fairly as possible under the budgetary constraints allotted to us. For ten of his thirty years, I was Chair of the Music Department. It was my good fortune, therefore, to have known him well.

My sincere condolences to his family.

I'm moved. Bill Babula was my dean for as long as I taught at SSU. He was a nice and fair person. I miss him.
