Yvette Fallandy Obituary

Yvette Marie Fallandy
Bennett Ridge resident and pioneer champion of higher education in Sonoma County, Yvette Marie Fallandy died in Santa Rosa on January 15th, 2021, at the age of 94. She was the first child of Arthur and Elise Fallandy, and spent her childhood in Santa Monica, CA. After earning a doctorate in French Studies at UCLA, her first teaching appointment brought her to Swarthmore College, an elite school in Pennsylvania. Returning to California, she joined the faculty at Mills College, where she established a lifelong friendship with the Catholic chaplain, John Cummins, the future second bishop of Oakland. In 1964 Yvette was invited to the future Sonoma State University and was tasked with developing a magnet program in French Studies. Her enthusiasm convinced many students to pursue this discipline and considered Yvette as a mentor who shaped their future as teachers and linguists. Her success as a professor and dean led to her appointment as Vice President in charge of Academic Affairs, the first woman to reach that level at the university. In this position, she espoused academic independence and integrity. As chairperson of the selection committee for a new president, she blocked the appointment of a comrade of S. I. Hayakawa, and later helped to crush Peter Diamandopoulous for cashiering several faculty members, even those who were tenured, and replacing them with his toadies. Retirement in 1997 did not slow her activities in the broader community. She continued to patronize the opera, symphony and ballet in San Francisco along with the Public Broadcasting Service, and as a devoted parishioner of St. Eugene's Cathedral, she advocated greater lay participation in the governance of the Catholic Church. Interest in her heritage was refreshed by frequent trips to France, at first with her mother and later as director of tours that she customized. Chronic asthma did not handicap her from being the consummate animal lover, adopting rescue pets and feral creatures and feeding dozens of deer, wild turkeys, and raccoons who crept daily onto her domain. Whenever she was absent from her home, she never abandoned them but made elaborate arrangements for their daily sustenance. Her first priority at home centered on her aging mother who under Yvette's scrupulous care passed the centenary milestone. Ironically Yvette's description of a colleague is a remarkable self-portrait -- "Brilliant as was her mind, it was the least of her: her courageous honesty, her absolute refusal to compromise what she deemed right, her tickling ready wit, her perceptive compassion, her active generosity to all, and her unflagging loyalty to her friends made her a woman among women." She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Martin, and she leaves behind three nephews and a niece, grandnephews and –nieces, numerous friends and neighbors, her devoted helper Anna Rogina, and an assortment of well-behaved pets ready for adoption. No plans for a service have been finalized, but a more detailed sketch of Yvette's life is available at [email protected]

Yvette was my great aunt, the daughter of my grandmother Adele's sister Elise. I have many great memories of her and Elise. Sorry to hear of her passing.

I never had the good fortune of being a student of Yvette Fallandy, but our lives were intertwined since 1964. She often called me her “favorite priest,” but I know in my heart that over the years others more qualified and more saintly had replaced me in her clerical pantheon. Yvette first hosted the first Masses that were celebrated for SSU students, and our improvised chapel was her little apartment off campus. She was active at St. Eugene’s Cathedral and served as president of the Pastoral Council of the Diocese of Santa Rosa. What brought us especially close were the four customized tours that she led to France and had opened to parishioners and her students in the university’s on-going education programs. The photo here captures Yvette with her friend Sue Thomas, an instructor in the university’s nursing program, in a casual moment in Honfleur, France. In a word, as an admirer put it succinctly, “she was not afraid to speak up to power,” either as a university administrator or a parishioner, and her words were unfailingly enlightened and straightforward. I am so proud to have know her for over 25 years. Yvette not only invited me into her home, but her family. She allowed me on occasion to even look after her mother Elsie which she did not allow just anyone! Together we led several tours together to France. What a truly remarkable women and what a true friend. Rest in Peace my dear friend, your "Merit" it.

My late husband, Don was a student in her OLLI classes at SSU. In 2004 we went on her tour to Normandy and Paris and loved it. Don was there in WWII. She was a great teacher and one of Don's favorites

We feel a great loss hearing about the passing of Yvette on "The Ridge". She was such a pioneer and friend to all neighbors. Our relationship with her developed after the fire. Yvette had 5 rescue dogs and one of them, Pippin came to our home a week after the fire. We did not know who he belonged to and all phones were out, so we kept him until we found out he was Yvette's dog. Five dogs were becoming difficult for her, and Pippin was a hand full. He would escape every day and roam the neighborhood, looking for treats from neighbors and workers, and getting in harms way of trucks and cars. He was well known as the little black and white friendly dog. During the time we had him after the fire, we fell in love with him and asked to adopt him. She reluctantly said yes, and knew it would be best for him. It took a while for him to settle in and he would occasionally escape our house and run to hers, then later run back to ours. Neighbors would call me and say "Pippins on the run again" and I would pick him up or Yvette would drive over in her fancy mustang and hand him over.

Yvette and her mother were animal lovers and always had a group of well loved and cared for rescue dogs in their home. Yvette had a warm heart and a great sense of humor. She will be missed.
