Beverly Smith Obituary

Beverly Smith

February 2nd, 1945 to March 31st, 2021

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Mama, Wife & Nama. Bev was an extraordinary woman with boundless love and warmth to share with those around her. She was born in Kamloops to Josephine and Jim Raymond. Her maternal grandparents had emigrated from San Stefano Del Sol, Italy to Nelson, BC. She spent many wonderful summers on the family farm in Nelson with Pops, her Mom, brother Al and cousins. In 1967 Bev graduated from nursing training at St. Paul's hospital in Vancouver. She arrived in Prince George to work at the local hospital where she met her adoring husband, Darryl Smith, marrying into a large and energetic family. Together they had three daughters who she gifted with so many blessings. She was a patient, kind, gentle woman who loved boldly and opened her arms to her daughters friends wholeheartedly. Bev was one of the original Edgewood Moms and there are so many fond memories we will hold close to our hearts forever. Bev was dedicated to her nursing profession and provided her patients with the same care and kindness she gave so freely to those close to her. She worked at the Prince George hospital for many years and finished her career doing what she seemed to love most, homecare nursing. In her career she developed many special friendships that continue to this day. As we grapple with the loss of our sweet Mama we are struck by the many circles of friendships and connections Mom had developed over the years. Bev had a gentle nature and was dedicated to her family and friends. She remained close to her 45'ers group (friends she first met in elementary school), friends from her nursing career, close connections that first grew in Edgewood and the special friendships she developed through her children and their families. Struggling to make sense of her loss are her three daughters, Kristi, Shannon & Trinity, her heartbroken and beloved husband, of 52 years, Darryl and her 8 granddaughters, Ella, Josephine, Tilly, Sadie, Isla, Tessa, Kate & Jane along with her loving son -in- laws, Parker & Chris. Nama made every granddaughter feel special, loved, and appreciated. Bev had a close relationship with her brother, Al and we are so grateful for our family trips to Nelson with him joining in the chaos. Those many summers in Nelson will be some of the ones we cherish the most. We are so incredibly grateful for those angels among us that helped us to get Mom to Vancouver and back home again. Bev wanted a diagnosis, and she wanted more time. She was officially diagnosed with advanced ALS March 22nd. Sadly, the time was far too short, and we are grateful to have been able to bring Bev home and to take care of her in the way she wanted. We are so very thankful to the Parkinson's Society of BC, especially Tricia Wallace, the medical teams at UBC, VGH and GF Strong, especially the nurses & social worker on the respiratory ward at VGH. We wish to extend our gratitude to Dr. Denise McLeod, our angel on earth and Father Gilbert whom walked beside Bev in these final days with such kindness, compassion and care along with the palliative nurses, homecare and rapid mobilization team. Also, her diabetic team in Prince George and her Outpatient Dietician, Lindsay Kraitberg. We are forever grateful. Special thanks to her niece, Leah also a gifted nurse. Bev was so happy to have a nurse by her side, helping her husband and daughters to care for her in these final days. Bev's extraordinary love for family and friends, her grace and strength will continue to inspire us. She was the centre of our family and an amazing matriarch. Love never ends. A private service will be held April 10th at 11 am at St. Mary's. We look forward to celebrating her life at a future date with more family and friends. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the ALS (www.alsbc.ca) society in her name. We would be profoundly grateful. The private mass can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZoWF8s9hhxFNj7vCMUt47Q or follow the links that will be posted at https://www.facebook.com/groups/bevsmithmemorialpg to view the slideshow and service.

Bev spent many hours at our house nursing our son through a very rough surgery and our dog Nanook really liked too. Shannon and Tony went to school together we would see her at Duchess Park and around here and there. Bev was a beautiful soul who will be missed always, sorry for your lose.

I will always think of Bev as my best nursing buddy and soulmate. Our week together during our SPH 50th RN graduation reunion in Vancouver WAS THE BEST. I am so very grateful we had the opportunity to “ catch
,up” after all those years, but like it was yesterday. The shopping and dining was great too but the most fun was bragging about our families. It was very evident that Darryl, her girls and their families meant everything to her. And I’ll always treasure her Christmas letters And family pictures she sent over the years to keep in touch, a thoughtfulness only a good friend, like Bev would think of. I appreciate it now more than ever, realizing what a blessing Bev was and always will be to me.

I was shocked and saddened to read of Bev's death. She and I met and got to know each other well in 1983 during a nursing refresher course. Though we did not "hang out" after the course was done, we often ran into each other around town and had wonderful catch-up visits. She was indeed a kind, warm and wonderfully humorous individual who made people feel special and accepted. I was lucky to have her as part of the patchwork quilt of my life - one of the people who make you feel warm and happy when you are with them. I wish you - her family - strength through this very sad and difficult time, and much joy in your family memories as you go on with life without her. She will be very fondly remembered by so very many people. Take good care of each other.

Bev was wise as well as classy. It was fun calling her "chipmunk".... brings tears. I'm still in deep sorrow with her departure. I was there when you met and also when you tied the knot. Your three girls are a big part of her you lucky guy. The grandkids reflect Bev's joy. Thinking of you Darryl, Kristi, Shannon and families. The pandemic has limited physical presence but not the love felt. A virtual goodbye to Bev so wonderfully delivered ..... her three ladies said it all. Looking forward to sharing hugs. Much love ...... Dave

I was incredibly lucky to grow up in Edgewood Terrace where kids played in the streets throughout the year and had Mr. Smith's Gym Night on Fridays. Such rare and special communities are founded people like Bev and Daryl. Mr Smith's horseplay with all the kids, Bev's giggle and energy creating a positive atmosphere wherever she went and their fiery daughters playing and arguing. My deepest thanks to the Smiths for creating a magical place for kids to grow up in and neighbors to live and my deepest condolences for their loss.

Bev was a ray of sunshine, full of love and beauty, inside and out. She was the calm in the room and the giggle that lit up everyone, a mixture of perfection that we had the pleasure of experiencing. The angels are now having that gift, and we too, will again in heaven. Until then, let us shine this love and kindness to everyone we encounter because Bev blessed us with that. Love and prayers always for Darryl and girls. We’re here for you through everything.
Biggest hugs,

Bev was the sister in my heart. She was a wonderful aunt to my boys and a friend who helped me as a young mother. She was a kind, gentle soul, very much like her beloved dad Jim. I found a couple of pictures to share. One was in the kitchen of the house on Nicola St. in Kamloops with Jo, Bev, Randy and myself. The other was taken in the California Redwoods. Al was starting a new job in California, Bev came with us to help a young couple with 3 little boys start our new life after college.

Words are inadequate to express my grief at losing such a dear dear girlfriend whom I adored so very much. I always loved her daughters so much too They always greeted me like a dear friend of theirs too whenever I saw them.
Daryl always provided humerus comic relief whenever I visited them.
They are truly & probably the nicest family I have ever met.

I want to send my heartfelt condolences to Darryl, Kristi, Shannon, Trinity and their families. It’s been many years but as I sit here reading about Bev’s beautiful life, I’m reminded of the many memories I have of visits to the Smith house as I grew up in Edgewood. One of my favourites was when I got to go home for lunch with Trinity and Mrs. Smith would always serve the yummiest chicken noodle soup. She was always so happy and welcoming. I was just talking to my mom and she was telling me wonderful things about Bev and the friendship she had with her while working at the hospital together. I’m so deeply sorry for your loss.
