Charles H. Smith
Richmond - Deacon Charles H. Smith of Richmond, VA, formerly of Waverly, VA, quietly on Friday morning, April 2, 2021, was called from labor to reward. Charles was born on February 4, 1939, to the late Joseph and Annie Mae Smith. He received his education from Sussex County Training School, Sussex, VA.
Charles loved the Lord and he did not neglect his soul's salvation. He accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member of Lily of the Valley Holiness Church, Waverly, VA, under the leadership of the late Rev. C. W. Vaughan. He worked for Jefferson Hotel for many years until retirement.
Charles was a kind man, with a big smile and an infectious laugh, who loved his family and meeting people. He never met a stranger. One of his biggest hobbies was painting. Each time he would return to Waverly to visit his family, he would often walk around the home house to see what needed to be painted or repaired before he returned to his primary home. As he painted, you could often hear him singing praises to God. The way to his heart was to bring him a gallon of ice cream and some good conversation about old times. He never let his disability hinder anything that he wanted to accomplish. He worked and continued to serve the Lord until his health started to decline.
Charles married the love of his life, his sweetheart, the late Beulah M. Smith. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by: three brothers, Ernest Smith, Donald Brooks, Sr. and Earl Brooks, Sr.
Charles leaves memories to be cherished by: three brothers, James Brooks, Sr., Leon Smith and Robert Hamlin of Waverly, VA; six sisters, Dorothy M. Vaughan, Sarah Barrow (James) of Waverly, VA, Lorraine Grimstead of Virginia Beach, VA, Celestine Grant of Washington, DC, Juanita Revish of Petersburg, VA, and Doretha S. Johnson of Ivor, VA; special friends, Bishop George Brown, Barbara Smith, Martha Morgan of Richmond, VA and Calvin Holmes of Surry, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services will be held 12:00 Noon, Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Empowerment Temple Ministries, 219 N. County Drive, Waverly, VA, Pastor Terrance L. Green, Sr., eulogist. The interment to follow at First Baptist Church Waverly.

We are so sorry for the loss of Charles, we didn't know him that long, but God orchestrated to bring our lives together for a short period and it was wonderful!
He was such a great man, he loved to laugh and my husband would get him laughing, he loved music, we loved our visits with him, we would have sandwiches together. We sure will miss him we didn't get to see him enough due to sicknesses and covid and other circumstances, but he was always in our heart and we talked just about every day, sometimes more than once a day we sure will miss hearing his voice and those beautiful phone calls.
May God bless and comfort the family.
