SMITH, GORDON P.
81, of South Kingstown, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2021. Born in Providence, Gordon was the son of the late Sibley and Catherine (Sisk) Smith.
He graduated from Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine and St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York.
Mr. Smith served honorably in the United States Army. After serving in the Army, he spent the next 33 years using his journalism talents working for the Providence Journal. He began as a copy editor and held several management positions. After retiring from the Journal, he enjoyed several years working for the Pawtucket Red Sox organization.
In his younger years, Gordon volunteered at the local fire company and was a Sunday School teacher at St. Augustine Church in Kingston. Gordon also enjoyed travelling back to his high school alma mater, Hebron Academy, to deliver diversity speeches to students.
Gordon is pre-deceased by his partner, Arthur Davey.
He is survived by his two children: Tara (Rich) Levesque of Landenberg, PA, and David Smith of Narragansett. Additionally, he is survived by two grandchildren; Mason Levesque and Lorraine Smith; and his brother and sister in law, Sibley Smith and Cecile Cohen of Perryville.
The family would especially like to thank the wonderful and supportive staff at Brookdale South Bay as well as his Hope Hospice angels that cared for him in his last years.
Gordon, also called 'Butch" by many, was a lifelong Red Sox fan. As a young boy, he purchased the first household TV for the sole purpose of watching the Sox. Anywhere he lived, he turned a large section of the backyard into an official sized softball field and hosted annual softball games with friends and family. In retirement, he travelled the country visiting as many baseball stadiums as he could see, taking the scenic route wherever possible. He also loved turtles, trains, ice cream, and watching local high school football games.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
