passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018 at his home in Groton, MA surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Providence, a son of the late James J. and Elizabeth E. (Millerick) Bryan. Dr. Bryan was a well-respected Board-Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Lahey Health in Burlington, MA and their satellite facilities for over 30 years. In addition to his clinical practice, he led several research fellowships focused on Cellular, Tissue, and Organ Culture and Peripheral Nerve Regeneration at Lahey Health.
Raised and educated in Cranston, RI, David was the co-valedictorian of his graduating class at Cranston High School West. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a fellowship to study cryogenics at the Medical Research Center in London, England. He graduated Cum Laude from Harvard Medical School, completing his general surgery and plastics reconstructive residencies at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA.
Dr. Bryan received many accolades and was recognized consistently in Boston Magazine's "Guide to the Best Doctors in the Boston Area". He was also featured in the Consumer's Research Council of America's "Guide to America's Top Plastic Surgeons." Throughout his career, Dr. Bryan was adored by his many patients and sought after by his peers for his professional expertise.
Dr. Bryan was passionate about education and took great pride in the clinical instruction he provided his residents. For many years, he donated his time to instruct and mentor undergraduate students at Harvard and MIT enrolled in a Health Science and Technology seminar entitled the "Arts and Science of Medicine."
Dr. Bryan applied his skills in the restoration of his historic home known as "The Elms." He designed, planted, and maintained many flower gardens and re-created a fruit orchard to what would have been in the 19th century.
David is survived by his brother Thomas J. Bryan and his wife Cynthia of North Smithfield, RI, his sister Susan M Bryan of Greenville, RI, and nieces Emma and Madeline Bryan.

Hearing of Dr. Bryan's passing I immediately thought of what a truly outstanding person he was. It seems so unfair that this wonderful guy who was so gentle, caring and sincere has been taken. I realize this note may be late but Dr. Bryan saved me with his skill. I will say a prayer for Dr. Bryan and hope he is mentoring surgeons here on earth

Dr Bryan was an immense asset to the Plastic and Reconstructive surgery residency program at the Lahey Clinic. We all have mentors and teachers who played a part in shaping and molding who we are today. He was definitely an integral part of that for me. He will be missed by many far and wide.

I only heard about Dr. Bryan's passing today, and am very saddened and shocked. He performed a major reconstruction for me many years ago, and when I ran into him at the hospital 15 years later, he came over and gave me a big hug. I couldn't believe he remembered me! He was one of the most wonderful clinicians and human beings I have ever met. He will be greatly missed.

I just recently learned of David's very tragic and untimely death. We spent 5 years together, working on various projects at his historic home, and traveling. He especially enjoyed visiting other historic homes in New England. I have such fond memories of the trip we made to England and to visit my family in northern Italy. We took that trip with my parents and godmother. My mother, at age 95, still talks about what a wonderful time we all had together. David was a brillant surgeon and devoted healer. I will forever be grateful for his loving care of my father during his last days at Lahey. Above all, David was a kind and loving man. Rest in peace, dear David.

I just learned yesterday and I am so deeply saddened that my dear colleague, caregiver and friend has passed. I first met David when he was a surgical resident at MGH in Boston and I was a fledgling O.R. nurse. Our paths crossed many years later in the O.R. at Lahey Clinic when I had become a clinical practitioner and teacher. I admired his devotion to his patients and his ability to bring out the best practices and care from the nursing staff who worked with him.
David was an elegant surgeon, mentor and a true artist in his profession. Working with him was a real privilege and watching him operate was inspiring. He helped me realize that I had chosen the right path in my own profession as a nurse, that the O.R. was where I belonged. I am very grateful to have known and worked with this wonderful man.
I offer my deepest sympathies to the Bryan family and the family of those who were fortunate to have worked with him as a brilliant surgeon, researcher and physician. I will never forget you, my dear colleague and friend. God bless you. Merrie Watters, R.N.
