O'NEILL, JOAN, E.
89, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter Mary on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. She was the beloved wife of 57 years to the late Vincent P. O'Neill. Joan was the daughter of the late Raymon Nunez and Ida (Trett) Hoar, and she lived most of her life in Pawtucket. Five years ago, she moved to Atria Senior Living in Lincoln, where she became an active and treasured member of the community. She attended East High School (now Tolman) and later graduated from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. In her 39 years as a registered nurse, she worked at the former Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, Notre Dame Hospital in Central Falls, and, for 23 years, the Rhode Island School for the Deaf, where she performed hearing tests throughout the state. She retired in 1991. In 1972, Joan and Vin purchased a home in Touisset Point in Warren, where they spent summers for over 40 years, time they truly cherished with family and friends. As a mother and grandmother, Joan was strong, patient, and full of wisdom and loving devotion. Always a joyful and warm presence, Joan, was fondly known to her husband, and her entire family as "Red." She adored parties, games, a good joke, desserts, and any excuse to gather with her large family and to dance and sing to Frank Sinatra. She was an expert knitter and had a passion for movies and her deep faith. Her laugh could light up any room and she will be greatly missed by her family and dear friends. She is survived by her eight children: Vincent O'Neill Jr.; Timothy O'Neill and his wife, Jennifer; Peter O'Neill and his wife, Margaret; Christopher O'Neill and his wife, Judith; Mary Murray and her husband, Stephen; Elizabeth Bradley and her husband, Michael; John O'Neill and his wife, Roberta; and Anne Sebastian and her husband, Kurt. She also leaves 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was the sister of the late William Nunez. Due to current circumstances, Joan's Mass of Christian Burial will be video live streamed and available to view right from Joan's obituary page on the O'Neill Funeral Home website, on Tuesday, January 12th, at 10 AM. The burial in Mount Saint Mary Cemetery in Pawtucket will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joan can be made to Hope Health Hospice and Palliative Care (1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI, 02904). For online condolences and to view the Mass, please visit www.oneillfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements by O'Neill Funeral Home.

On behalf of the Thompson family of Denver street, I send my sincere condolences to the family of Mrs. O'Neill. I knew Mrs. O'Neill through the many years that her stalwart husband oversaw our beloved Fr. Barry CYO Center on Denver Street through the 1960's and early 1970's. Of course we all knew and played with at least one of her clan of eight. The many positive contributions of the O'Neill's to so many threads of the fabric of life in Pawtucket, from the CYO to Sacred Heart Church, St. Ray's and the funeral home - be in public or private, will remain a true and lasting testament to Mrs. O'Neill's character, integrity and sincere geniality. I recall her ever present smile as contagious. In mourning, the O'Neill clan can be comforted in knowing that she left her world a better place.

After school i would walk from Sacred Heart and go pick up Anne and John and take them for walks when they were little. Both of your parents were always so kind to me and they always thanked me for helping out. They were wonderful people. My prayers and condolences to the entire O'Neill family.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the entire O’Neill family. I fell in love with the O’Neill family many years ago when I first stepped foot into the funeral home on Atwells Ave., I heard Vinny singing all the parts of the song “Would it be Lovely” (from My Fair Lady) and when I saw the beautiful family portrait hanging in the wall of their Cottage St funeral home, I knew I had made the right choice to work there. Over the three decades I worked for John I had the privilege of meeting many members of the family and especially enjoyed their family and employee Christmas parties. I will remember Joan has a peaceful lady and proud matriarch. May you all find comfort in knowing that she has reunited with the love of her life Vinny. God bless you all, Sheila Cardente-Capece

PS: Thank you for sharing the video of the funeral mass, it was beautiful, and I loved the music.

To Vinny, John and The Entire O'Neill Family,

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of your mother Joan. I will always remember her and your Dad from our days at Sacred Heart Church growing up. Joan always had a smile on her face and a calm and peaceful disposition. And during the times we served as altar boys your mom and dad were very supportive and helpful to us all. They were truly active and dedicated parishioners who supported all of us younger folks as we were growing up in our faith. And speaking of that, I recall the many times that Vinny and myself took a ride to Mister Donut for coffee and donuts after the last Mass on Sundays.
It was truly heartwarming to view the funeral Mass and Vinny's eulogy was very touching.
Once again, on behalf of my entire family, please accept our heartfelt sympathy on Joan's passing. We will pray for her as she is now at her eternal rest with Vincent and with her Lord in heaven.
Sincerely, Steve Kilmartin

Dear John, Tim, Vin and families,

Please accept our sincere sympathy on your Mom’s passing. John, in your kindness and professionalism, you and your dad have comforted so many people in their time of need. We wish this same comfort for you at this difficult time.

We have known and loved the O’Neill family since we were all children at Fr. Barry CYO. Your dad gave me my first job. We spent time at Touissett with you and your parents, the Lynches, the Gagnons and others long ago.

Your mom was a special and inspiring lady who’s character lives on in her children and their children.

May god bless you.

The Toole family will miss Joan's beautiful smile and infectious laugh. Our mother Ev was so lucky to have Joan as a good friend. And of course I was the luckiest to have Joan as my Godmother. I remember getting excited to see a birthday card from Joan. I also remember a few visits to the O'Neil house. Our six siblings with 8 O'Neil kids was a handful and a blast! Sorry for your loss but I know Joan is smiling in heaven.

My heartfelt condolences to the O'Neill family at the passing of Joan. She was a lovely person with a delightful sense of humor. I know she will be sorely missed but never forgotten by her family and friends. She and Vinny became "members" of our family when Anne and Kurt were married and Ray and I had many enjoyable visits with them during our many cross country trips to see the "kids."

To the O'Neill family, I send my condolences. We knew both of your parents through RISD and Marriage Encounter. Joan and I had a great working relationship at the school for the deaf, and as the obituary says, she had a great sense of humor. She also was a very hard worker. My sympathy at this difficult time.

My husband Robert A. Iannotti and I then had the pleasure of being in Vincent and Joan's company as members of the Rhode Island Funeral Directors Association both on a Professional and Social Level. The photos of Joan as a little girl near the garden and flag pole were taken in front of my Grandparents house in Bay Springs. Her Grandma Trett's house was across the Lane. I remember Joan from my visits, she was absolutely beautiful as a young woman and I imagine I was probably a pest but she let watch her do her hair and makeup before her dates with Vin. Joan used to watch my Mom get ready for dates with my Dad. May all your memories of your wonderful Mom carry you through this difficult time.

I remember Joan from my days of working at the RI School for the Deaf. I started working there as a receptionist in 1977 and every morning the “ladies” from the hearing center would all walk by my desk with their suitcases in hand (hearing test machines). Joan always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye as she embarked on her day of testing. They would all return at the end of the day a little weary but Joan would still be smiling...and talking as the others would silently walk past my desk. I will always remember your mom from so long ago.
Wishing you strength and comfort during this difficult time.
