Ellis, Lois S. (Scialo)
76, a 49-year resident of Exeter, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, with her loving family at her side.
Born on October 2, 1943 in Providence, Lois was a daughter of Luigi and Assunta (Noviello) Scialo. She attended The Wheeler School from nursery school through 12th grade. She received her undergraduate degree from Salve Regina University with Honors and continued her education earning an M.A. in Political Science from Tufts University.
Lois proudly taught History and American Government at East Greenwich High School for 34 years. She was a beloved educator and colleague touching the lives of nearly 5,000 students through direct instruction as well as serving as class advisor for 6 different classes. Her students brought her joy while she brought them inspiration.
In addition to her teaching career, Lois was an award-winning entrepreneur as co-owner of Scialo Bros. Bakery. Though she played an integral role in the bakery throughout her life, she officially continued the family legacy established in 1916, after her father's passing in 1993, when she went into partnership with her sister, Carol. The bakery has been recognized numerous times on the Food Network and featured in Travel + Leisure. Lois was recognized in 2012, for her contributions to the preservation of Italian Culture by the National Organization of Italian American Women.
While her accomplishments were many, nothing gave her more joy than her family.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Calvin Ellis; their devoted son Geoff (Christina) Ellis; her cherished grandsons, Graham and Spencer Ellis; her loving sisters Carol (Dr. Joseph) Gaeta and Susan (Peter) Gaines; and many nieces and nephews.
A private Funeral Mass will be held on August 8, at 11am at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Narragansett. Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to THE CRANSTON-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 140 W Main Street, North Kingstown.
Family-only private interment will be held at Swan Point Cemetery.
Kindly omit flowers. Gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Lois Ellis to support cancer research and patient care via mail at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 or their e-giving site at www.jimmyfund.org/gift

Heartfelt condolences from the Quattrini sisters, Deborah, Julie and Kathy. Our father, Silvio, knew Lois from when she was a little girl. He worked for her father and sister Carol for over 50 years at the bakery and we would be remiss is we didn't offer our sincere sympathy. May she rest in peace.

Cal, Geoff and family, It has taken some time for me to compose my thoughts enough to write this. Unfortunately, I still find that I cannot adequately express the depth of my sympathy for your loss nor the breadth my admiration for Lois. All I can say is that Lois was, and remains, God's perfect gift to all that knew her of an exemplary mother , wife, teacher and friend. May God bless you all through this, the most difficult time, and may your future be blessed with the warmth, comfort and strength of her beautiful memory and example.

Mr. Ellis,
I am so sorry to hear this news. Mrs. Ellis was one of my most favorite teachers. She taught not only school lessons, but life lessons that shaped so many of her students. One of my fondest memories was her taking me back to see the ovens at Scialo’s! Please accept my dearest condolences to you and your family, and I hope you find peace knowing she touched so many lives.

I send my most sincere condolences to Cal. I was so sad to hear of the passing of Lois. There are some couples that belong together...like each individual was meant to be the other half of an equation that equaled 100%. Cal and Lois were like peanut butter and jelly, salt and pepper, and butter with delicious bread from Scialo's. I graduated in 1975, and during my time at the high school, Cal and Lois stood as pillars representing the best of our education. They inspired us, made us laugh and exemplified the highest character. They taught us history and showed us what love looked like. Tears are in my eyes as I write this. Cal, I will include you and your son in my prayers, as I can only imagine how much you will miss her. She was a treasure for sure, and gave so much to so many. May she shine on as your angel in heaven.

Cal,
Was heartbroken to learn of the passing of Lois. She was such a gracious lady and great colleague! One of my fondest memories is being your dinner guest one Christmas eve when I came to EGHS (Geoff was about 5). Lois served baked stuff shrimp. I thought I didn't like shrimp, but it was so delicious that it became my favorite dish! Please accept my most sincere condolences.

I am one of Lois' "fortunate" 5000 students and a graduate of a class that she & Cal advised (1972). Lois had a profound impact upon my education for which I will be forever grateful. I very much doubt that I could or would have finished college had I not attended her history classes. I offer my deepest condolences to Cal, (with whom I have maintained contact since hs. chiefly through a mutual "hang-out", Oatley's Restaurant. Oatleys is , sadly, gone now and I will miss catching up with Cal & friends) and his family. I'd like to add a hearty "THANK YOU!" to both Cal & Lois who made a difference in my education and life.

I had the honor of meeting "Miss Scialo" in 1969 when I was a freshman at East Greenwich High School as a student in her history class. I remember her as having a passion for educating her students and for being so kind and helpful. When Miss Scialo became Mrs. Ellis, it was the talk of the school. I remember how happy the students were for her because everyone love Mr. Ellis. I remember the twinkle in her eye when she would see him. They were an adorable couple loved by everyone.

As the years went by all three of my children also were students of Mrs. Ellis and she said to me on numerous occasions laughing, "now I feel old".

Several years ago I was up on Federal Hill with my children and we stopped into the bakery to see her. She always remembered all of us.

To the Ellis Family, we send our deepest sympathy. We are so sorry for your loss.
