WILKES-BARRE — John J. Yenchak, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, in the care of Celtic Hospice, Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Ashley, he was the son of the late Martin and Anna (Trudnak) Yenchak. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 66 years, Leila George Yenchak.
After attending Wilkes-Barre schools, John worked in the Dorrance Colliery for the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., with Associated Transport Trucking Co. in Dunmore for more than 30 years, and then retired from the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus. He was a member of St. Anthony's/St. George's Maronite Catholic Church and the Slovak Club, Wilkes-Barre. John was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener, and he loved taking walks with his wife in Kirby Park.
Most notably, John enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1946. He was known as a China Marine after serving in combat operations in Tien Tsin China as part of the 2nd Battalion 5th Marines 1st Marine Division as a machine gunner.
John is survived by his children, Carol Blaine, of Wilkes-Barre, Joan Lees, of England, John Jr., of Wyoming, Gaye Sickler, of Wilkes-Barre; 10 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a sister, Irene Quare.
The funeral will be private at the convenience of the family from Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre.
