Mayor of Gotemba Wakabayashi Youhei, Gotemba City International Association Chair
November 29, 2020
On behalf of Gotemba City, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to Mr. John McDowell Sharpe IV for his sudden passing.
In 1964, when Gotemba City and Chambersburg City celebrated the 5th anniversary of their sister city tie-up, when the first Mayor of Gotemba, Haruichi Katsumata, visited Chambersburg, he was welcomed at home as the Mayor of Chambersburg and held a welcome party.
He also contributed to Wilson College’s study abroad program, starting with Ms. Yae Katsumura and Ms. Mitsuko Suganuma. He was so kind to us that we couldn’t write about the welcome of the delegation after that.
The fact that he welcomed us like a family can foster a long-term friendship between the two cities for 60 years. It can be said that this is one of the reasons why he was able to do so, and his great contributions so far will be deeply engraved in future sister city exchanges between the two cities.
We would like to express our heartfelt condolences from all the citizens. He will live forever in our hearts.

John was always a gentleman and always a pleasure to be around. I knew him when I practiced law in Franklin County as a Legal Services attorney. Jack, please accept my deepest condolences to you and your family.

So sorrry about your loss of your Dad. He was an amazing man. He worked closely with my mom in church and for the animal shelter. He was such a good friend in my growing up. Love him.
