Donald Miller

Mercersburg - Donald Edward Miller, formerly of Mercersburg, passed away at age 87, on Thursday June 7, 2018. His health had been failing for the last year. He died peacefully with his wife Doris at his side at Providence Place in Chambersburg.

Born on April 18, 1931, Don was the son of the late Bessie Harsh Miller and Joseph Miller. Don graduated from Mercersburg High School in 1949. At age 20, he joined the U.S. Army as an Infantryman and served in the Korean War. For 32 years, he worked at Letterkenny Army Depot as an Electronics Equipment Inspector. At age 55, he retired to devote more time to his loved ones.

Don enjoyed traveling, gardening, spending time with his family, and was always a very good listener. He and Doris took their two daughters and his sister, Debbie camping in tents in Niagara Falls, Thousand Islands, Ocean City, and the Smoky Mountains. They traveled frequently to NM to visit their daughter, Melissa. Don and Doris spent many winters near Lake Placid with their daughter, Karen and explored FL together. They also visited family in NC including The Outer Banks.

He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Doris Statler Miller, whom he married on April 7, 1953. He also leaves behind his two daughters, Melissa (Curt) Smith of Mercersburg and Karen Miller of Chambersburg. His grandson, Josh (Cheri) Smith; great-grandson, Lysander; and great-granddaughter, Binah gave him the thrill of his life. He will also be sadly missed by his sister, Debbie Miller Elliott; two nephews, Todd and Alex Swope; and niece, Angie Swope (Jim) Carmack.

He was preceded in death by his four year old granddaughter, Linzi Dawn Smith in 1987, which nearly broke his heart.

A celebration of life will be held at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home in Mercersburg on June 16, 2018 from 2 to 4 PM. A short service will be held around 2:30 PM.

Don was a member of Trinity Church. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the .
