Michael W. Cooper Obituary
Michael W. Cooper Michael W. Cooper, 52, of Chambersburg, PA, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, August 21, 2014 in the emergency room of Chambersburg Hospital. Born April 6, 1962 in Chambersburg, he was the son of Orville G. Cooper, Jr. and Marie Scheib Cooper. Michael served with the US Navy from 1981 1989 and continued his service with the US Navy Reserves for two additional years. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Shippensburg University in 2003 and was employed as a fourth grade teacher with the Chambersburg Area School District at Andrew Buchanan Elementary School. For the past ten years he served as a basketball coach with the Chambersburg Area School District, coaching students at CAMS North. In addition to teaching and coaching basketball, he also coached baseball in the Hamilton Heights Youth League and most recently was an Assistant Coach for the Trojan JV Baseball team. He was an avid sports fan. His hobbies included golf, singing, collecting baseball cards, and Penn State football. In addition to coaching his own children, he touched the lives of many local athletes throughout his years of coaching. He was a member of King Street Church and Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Kathy Gayman Cooper, whom he married March 6, 1982; three children, Geoffrey A. Cooper of Chambersburg, Libby C. Royer and husband Chris of Nashville, TN, and Christian M. Cooper of Chambersburg; two sisters, Sherry Bowers (husband Todd) and Kim Stouffer (husband Ryan),; his mother and father-in-law, D. Eugene and Evelyn Gayman all of Chambersburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at King Street Church, 162 East King Street, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Don Baker, Rev. Lester F. Stine, and Rev. Paul B. Baker officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-9:00 PM Monday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chambersburg Area School District Foundation, earmarked for the Mike Cooper Memorial Gift, 435 Stanley Ave. Chambersburg, PA 17201.
