Feb. 10, 1922 - April 9, 2021 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, mother-in-law, gandmother and great grandmother, Alta Eula King, on April 9, 2021 at about 11:00 p m. She had reached the age of 99 years 2 months and passed from natural causes. Her daughter Rose and wonderful hospice caregivers were in close loving attendance at the time. Alta was a long time San Pedro resident who was born at Batesville, Arkansas, the daughter of John Evan and Ida Watkins. Alta immigrated to California in the early 1940's to participate in the war effort along with her then husband, Glen Roger DeFord. Alta spent many years working as office manager for the oral surgery practice of Dr.'s Apfel and Thompson, who had offices in San Pedro and Torrance, California. Alta was a true care giver during her life time. She donated her time and dollars to many different charities and causes. She was very politically interested and to the very end spent a good part of each day reading newspapers and watching and listening to different political broadcasts. Alta was a wonderful musician. Her clear and distinctive voice, instinctive harmonies and melodic guitar playing provided some of her greatest joy and satisfaction. She had a real talent for getting people who thought that they "can't sing" to sing along by leading songs that we all learned at school, summer camp and Sunday school. She performed professionally at local coffee houses and also had a gig or two as a Las Vegas lounge performer. She also performed as a "wandering minstrel" at the newly opened Ports O' Call in the summer of 1963. Most of all, she was happiest when she and her daughters, Joy and Rose, were singing together or working out an intricate rendition of an old standard, country or bluegrass tune to perform at some local music get together. Alta will be greatly missed by her daughter, Rose McGillivray; grandsons, David McGillivray (Maria) of San Pedro and Michael Davidson (Elaine) of Malaga Cove; great granddaughters, Serena McGillivray and Danielle Davidson; and her long time caregiver, Dora Nunez. She was predeceased by her husband, John A. King in 2007; her son, Glen Roger DeFord II; her daughters, Joy Suzanne Davidson (Joe), and Elizabeth A. King; and her grandson, Christopher DeFord. The family is planning a Celebration of Life in the near future.
