08/11/1948 - 02/26/2021 With deep sadness we announce the passing of Danko Bijelic, a loving husband and father. Danko was born on August 11, 1948 and left this world on February 26, 2021. He was born in a little village, Dragove, on the island of Dugi Otok in Croatia to Mate and Ivanica Bijelic. He moved to Rijeka with his family at the early age of 8. He came to the United States at the age of 21, but his heart was always with his homeland. Upon his arrival in San Pedro he began fishing and later joined the ILWU Local 13 then 63 where he worked until retirement. He enjoyed cooking, playing cards with friends, watching all sports especially soccer (his favorite team Hajduk Split and the Croatian national team). Danko was an avid reader and historian. Danko leaves behind his loving wife of 34 years Lidija, two sons Julian (Jennifer) and Gregory who were his pride and joy, his brother Leonardo Bijelic, many nieces and nephews both in the US and Croatia, along with close friends and extended family. He is proceeded in death by his parents and 7 siblings. His presence in our lives will deeply be missed by all. A memorial service will be held at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church Monday March 22 at 10:30 a.m. with the viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. Immediately following the mass he will be laid to rest at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Danko's memory to Hospicij Marija Krucifiksa Kozulic (http://hospicij-marijakozulic.hr), a monastery and hospice in Rijeka, or to Lidija Bijelic who will personally deliver the donations this summer.
