Aug. 2, 1933 - June 4, 2021 In loving memory of Elio Vitiello who passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Elio was born on the island of Ponza in Italy. At the age of 4, he lost his mother due to illness. He began fishing with his father at an early age. But at age 16, his father passed away leaving him to be the head of household. In 1963, Elio met Eleanor Mazzella while she was visiting the island. In October of that year, he emigrated to New York, and married Eleanor on February 1st, 1964. They had their first child Anthony Joseph in March of 1965. Work was hard to find for him in New York. In 1967, some friends in San Pedro, California told Elio to come check-out the flourishing commercial fishing industry in the Los Angeles Harbor. So the family came out, he found work, and they made San Pedro home. They bought their first house in 1968, and then had their daughter Stephanie Ann in June of 1969. Elio enjoyed cooking the seafood he caught, as well the fresh vegetables from his gardens. The family looked forward to his authentic dishes. His fishing excursions took him to Alaska, Mexico, and Central America, until he retired from the Santa Maria fishing boat in 1995. In retirement, Elio loved to tend to his thriving gardens and canned dozens of jars of tomato sauce. He was later blessed with two grandchildren, whom he loved to watch them play sports and share stories about growing up on the island. He is survived by his wife Eleanor, his two children Anthony and Stephanie, his daughter-in-law Meri, and his two grandchildren Anthony Joseph, and Vincent Val (also know as AJ and Vinny). A viewing will be held at McNerney's Mortuary on Sunday, June 13th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The funeral service will also be held at McNerney's Mortuary on Monday, June 14th at 10:00 am, followed by the cemetery service at Green Hills Memorial Park.
