Mary P. Miller passed away on September 29, 2020 of natural causes at her home in Torrance, California, just 11 days shy of her 95th birthday. Born in Yorkville, Ohio in 1925, Mary was first generation American of Italian descent, and was the last surviving member of a family which comprised of six siblings, all brothers. A graduate and lifelong supporter of Ohio State University, Mary was a Music Educator and Arts Advocate, teaching in six school districts in Ohio prior to a 27 year tenure with the Torrance Unified School District until her retirement. A 54 year resident of Torrance, she was recipient of the city's Katy Geissert Award and Senior of the Year Award, as well as Los Angeles County's Older American Award, Mary was a Cultural Arts Commissioner for the city of Torrance, served on the boards of the Arts Council of Torrance, California Retired Teachers Association, Torrance Symphony Association, and many other local civic organizations. A classically trained soprano, she was for many years a member of the Torrance Civic Chorale, the South Coast Choral Society, and the St Margaret Mary Church Choir. Mary's passion for the arts is reflected in the numerous accolades received during a lifetime of championing the arts and in her maxim: 'Education and the Arts are the Elixir of Life'. Devoted spouse to Nickolas Miller who died in 2003, Mary is survived by her four children and four grandchildren. Private interment will take place at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes on Thursday, October 22 2020, where she will be laid to rest with her late husband. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to the Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation (torrancearts.org/donate)

What a great loss. Mrs. Miller was the best chorus teacher ever! She made music fun. Is it just me or did Torrance Unified just have the best music teachers? I had her at Adams and J.H. Hull. She made me think that she thought we all mattered and she loved what she was doing and it showed. Thank you Mrs. Miller for bringing the gift of song to so many. I’m sorry for the family and their loss.

The Heavens opened up on Sept .29, 2020, when God's newest Angel Mary Miller entered. We feel so blessed for all the many memories we hold dear in our hearts. It's not good bye but, like Roy Rogers sang "Happy trails to you, till we meet again." Her passion for music inspired generations of students! Mrs. Miller was my music teacher in elementary school. I remember her as warm, upbeat and joyful. I can hear her voice and see her conducting us. Her beautiful daughter, Celeste, was my piano teacher. My sincere condolences to her family and all who love her.

Mary was a delightful woman, who always had a smile on her face! I first met her when she was the music teacher at Carr Elementary School in Torrance 30 years ago. Bob Habel and I had the pleasure of sitting behind her for many years of concerts at the James Armstrong Threatre. She was a wonderful ambassador for music in Torrance and we will certainly miss her smiling face!

Mary was a long-time cherished member of our Sea Aire Women's Golf Club. We will always remember the way she lit up our faces with her friendliness, smiles, and conversations, and how she always led our singing of Christmas carols at our holiday banquet. She was always kind and sweet to everyone. We will love Mary and miss her always. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

We will miss Mary's beaming smile and always positive attitude, as well as her beautiful singing! On many occasions she would be the one to sing "God Bless America," especially for the Arts Council of Torrance. It was a pleasure to serve on many local cultural arts Boards with her. Avanti, Mary!
